Baseball's DH Versus Ohio Valley Goes Awry

UU falls 10-4 & 6-5 in pair of non-conference games

BECKLEY, W. Va. - When it rains it pours and Urbana baseball (0-10) left its road series against Ohio Valley (6-4) soaked - literally and figuratively. The Blue Knights dropped both games of Friday's doubleheader at Epling Stadium by a score of 10-4 in Game 1 and 6-5 in the second contest.

UU grabbed an early lead in the opener with three extra-base hits in the first inning by Mickey Barea, Brad Burkholder and Austin Pratt, but the host Scots scored in every inning but the second, including six unanswered to move ahead 6-1 in the fourth.

Then, UU added two in the fifth on Connor Coy's RBI double followed by an RBI single from Griffin Stevens to make it 6-3. The Blue Knights got another run back on Barea's RBI single up the middle in the sixth to make it 7-4.

Unfortunately, the trend continued as the Scots kept responding and put the game out of reach with a two-run homer and RBI single in the sixth.

The Blue Knights combined for 21 hits on the day with 11 coming in the first game. Barea, Burkholder, Pratt and Coy each had a base knock and extra-base hit. Daniel Quiroz also added a double while Cody Fullenkamp recorded his first career hit in his first start as a Blue Knight.

Freshman left-hander Chase Jessee (0-2) was tagged with the loss after allowing five runs on five hits and five walks in 2.1 innings. Relievers Zeth Tanner and Steven Beall closed out the game on the mound.

OVU starter Dion Felger improved to 2-1 on the year with 4.1 innings of work. The Scots started a left-hander in all three games of the series.

In Game 2, things continued to go against the Blue Knights.

UU was shut out over the first six innings with only five hits against OVU starter Ryan Valentine. UU freshman Tyler Bess, making his first collegiate start, gave the Blue Knights a chance by registering the deepest outing by a UU pitcher. The right-hander from Cincinnati, Ohio went 6.1 innings, as the Scots took a 3-0 lead with two unearned runs in the fourth and pushed one across in the sixth.

Then things finally clicked at the plate. The Blue Knight offense rewarded the first-year hurler with five runs on five hits in the final at-bat to put UU ahead 5-3. Pinch-hitter Marcel Toney ignited the comeback with his first career hit and then Mickey Losey tripled to plate a pair of runs which trimmed the deficit to 3-2.

The bats caught fire after that as Quiroz singled home the tying run and back-to-back clutch RBI hits from Pratt (2B) and Coy with two outs put the Blue Knights in front.

Bess entered the bottom of the seventh and notched his first strikeout of the game to start the inning. Then, he ran into trouble with a hit batter and surrendering only his second walk, followed by a single to load the bases with the winning run on first.

And then the skies opened up.

A furious burst of rain sent players sprinting off the field and a delay ensued, which forced Bess out of the game.

Following the untimely stoppage, reliever Robbie Guerrero III took the mound for UU in a tough spot. Right away, he tossed a wild pitch to allow runners to advance and make the score 5-4.

After a strikeout took some of the pressure away, RG3 then fell behind in the count and UU decided to intentionally walk the left-handed hitter to load the bases again with two outs. The UU right-hander never really got loose and could not find his zone. He ended up walking the final batter and OVU captured the series with the walk-off victory.
