Ohio Valley Takes Series Opener from Urbana, 8-1

BECKLEY, W. Va. – Urbana baseball ran into a buzzsaw in Thursday's 8-1 loss to Ohio Valley at Linda K. Epling Stadium. The Blue Knights managed just four hits, while striking out 12 times against OVU left-hander Michael Carey in the series opener.­

UU (0-8) plated its only run in the ninth inning when Connor Coy (1-4) pushed across Austin Pratt (1-3) on a ground out. Pratt came around after starting the final frame off with a single to left field.

Coy, Griffin Stevens and Zeth Tanner had the other three base knocks for the Blue Knights, who tied their sixth-highest team strikeout total during the program's D-II era.

OVU's Carey spun a complete-game effort with 114 pitches. The lefty's only run was unearned.

UU missed an early scoring opportunity by leaving two runners aboard in the top of the first. Mickey Losey drew a two-out walk and Carey plunked Pratt in the next at-bat. However, those were the only free passes allowed by Carey the entire game.

The Fighting Scots (4-4) jumped ahead 1-0 in the bottom of the first on a sacrifice fly and then pushed three runs across in the third against UU starter Vitor Takakura (0-3). The senior right-hander fell victim to five walks and allowed four hits to force his early exit with UU trailing 4-0.

Senior Patrick Orr bridged the middle innings on the mound and stuck out four batters with one earned run allowed. Freshman Ryan Townsend (1 H, 1 ER, 2 BB, 1 K) made his collegiate debut and closed out the final two frames on the hill.

OVU scored once in the fourth and fifth, and then added a pair of runs in the eighth for an 8-0 lead. Four Scots had multi-hit outings, led by center fielder Tyler Perkola going 2 for 3 with a pair of runs batted-in.

UU only had two runners reach third base with both coming in the ninth inning. The Blue Knights stranded seven altogether while the Scots left eight on base.

The two teams will finish out the season series tomorrow with a doubleheader at Epling Stadium. The first of two seven-inning games is slated for a noon first pitch.
