Flying Fleet Glides Past UU in Friday Doubleheader

Blue Knights fall 12-0 and 11-7 at Erskine (S.C.)

DUE WEST, S.C. – Urbana baseball opened its second weekend in South Carolina with a pair of games at Erskine College, falling to the Flying Fleet 12-0 and 11-7 Friday at Grier Field.

GAME 1 (ERSKINE 12, URBANA 0)
Brad Burkholder led off the game with a double, but that turned out to be the only UU hit against Erskine starter Michael Carpin (2-0). Carpin struck out six, walked two and hit a pair of batters in the complete-game effort. UU stranded all four of its baserunners.

UU starter Vitor Takakura (0-2) struggled and was pulled after not recording an out in the second inning. The Flying Fleet wound up with nine runs on four hits and seven walks in the frame. In total, UU surrendered 10 hits and 10 walks in the opening contest.

Erskine tacked on three more runs in the bottom of the sixth. EC first baseman Billy Ryan went 3 for 3 with an RBI and center fielder Chase Watts went 2 for 5 with four RBI.

GAME 2 (ERSKINE 11, URBANA, 7)
UU's bats got going in the second game, but an early deficit proved too great to overcome. The Blue Knights tallied nine hits and scored in each of the first four frames.

Junior Austin Pratt went 2 for 3 with three RBI and a double while junior right fielder Mickey Losey finished 2 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI.

UU starter Robbie Guerrero III was saddled with his second loss after allowing nine earned runs in 2.1 innings of work. Relievers Steven Beall and Zeth Tanner closed out the game on the hill.

Pratt ignited the offense on his RBI double in the first to give UU a 1-0 lead, but a three-run home run by Erskine in the bottom half put the home team in front. Senior Mickey Barea led off the second with a single and later scored on Burkholder's sacrifice fly to make it 3-2 Fleet.

After Erskine added another run, Pratt came up clutch again with an RBI single in the top of the third to make it 4-3. However, Erskine produced an RBI double, triple and two-run homer to put the game out of reach with six runs in the home half.

UU added two runs in the fourth on junior Mickey Losey's RBI double that scored freshman Marcel Toney in his first start. Pratt recorded his season-high third RBI on a sac fly in the next at-bat.

The Blue Knights scored two more runs in the seventh on a pair of throwing errors, but it was little too late.

Erskine's Zach Carter (1-0) picked up the win after two innings of relief work. First baseman Ryan led the way again with a 3-for-4 (HR, 2B, 4 RBI) effort at the dish.

UP NEXT
UU and Erskine will close out the series Saturday with a nine-inning game slated for an 11 a.m. first pitch at Grier Field.
