Urbana Falls Twice on Day 1 of MEC-PSAC Crossover

INSTITUTE, W. Va. - The Urbana women's volleyball team fell in straight sets during both matches Friday afternoon at the MEC-PSAC Crossover, hosted at West Virginia State University.

UU (0-6) dropped the tournament opener against Shippensburg (2-3), 25-14, 25-20, & 26-24, and then suffered a 25-16, 25-14, & 25-20 setback to Slippery Rock (6-0).

In the first match, Katlynn Dunlap, Courtney Niesen and Madison Davis led the Blue Knights attack with seven kills each. Dunlap also registered 13 digs against the Raiders. Anna Davis dished out a team-high 15 assists with seven digs while Deandra Atwood contributed eight assists and seven digs.

The Blue Knights struggled in the final set, hitting for a negative percentage, while being held to an overall attack mark of .059 for the match.

Aleese Butler's kill made the score 12-10 Shippensburg in the opening set until the Raiders pieced together a 13-4 run to end it. UU trailed again in the second set, 10-18, but fought back to get within four when another Butler kill made it 24-20 and forced a Raider timeout. The Blue Knights held a lead only twice during the first two sets.

UU improved in the final set and built a 22-17 lead after a back-and-forth affair to begin the stanza. Then, SU battled back to even the score 24-24 before two UU attack errors ended the match.

Shippensburg's Morgan DeFloria led all players with eight kills as the Raiders hit .198 as a team.

In the second match, Kaitlin Trace stood out for the Blue Knights with a match-high 13 kills on 21 attempts (.524). Maia Dunlap played tough on the defensive end with a team-high 20 digs while Katlynn registered seven kills and 13 digs, again. Aleese Butler had four kills to run her combined total for the day to nine.

The Blue Knights trailed 11-10 midway through the first set and kept within striking distance after a ball-handling error by Slippery Rock made it 18-14. But, the Blue Knights struggled down the stretch and fell 25-16.

In the second set, UU jumped out to a 3-1 lead but couldn't fend off a streaking SRU that ended up rattling off a lengthy run for the 11-point victory. The final set was the closest of the match with UU again putting together an early advantage 4-1 after a Trace kill. Unfortunately, The Rock responded again and UU was forced to play from behind for the majority of the set. UU got within a point at 17-16 but couldn't get pull out the comeback.

The Rock outhit the Blue Knights .250 to .074 overall and had 21 block assists compared to UU's 12.
