Blue Knights Win Third Straight

UU defeats Charleston 25-21 in first home night game

URBANA, Ohio -- A historic evening took place Thursday as Urbana football topped Charleston 25-21 in front of a record crowd of 3,412 in the first night game ever at UU Stadium.

Urbana won its third straight contest and improves to 3-2 overall and 2-2 in league play. It's the first three-game win streak since 2013 for the Blue Knights, who now lead the all-time series against Charleston, 4-3. The Golden Eagles drop to 1-4 overall (1-4 MEC).

UU maintained control for most of the game and held the visitors scoreless for 52 minutes. The Blue Knights led 13-0 at halftime following two Josh Cole field goals and an eight-yard touchdown grab by Rodell Rahmaan. The sophomore wideout also hauled a nine-yard TD in the fourth quarter to put the Blue Knights ahead 20-0. A Charleston safety and another Cole field goal from 32 yards made it 25-0 with under 10 minutes to play.

Then, Charleston made a late push with three touchdowns over the final 7:57, including a 16-yard run as time expired, but it wasn't enough.

UU quarterback Tajuan Green completed 19 of 38 passes for 269 yards and two scores. He's thrown two TD passes in four straight outings. Three Blue Knight receivers had at least 60 receiving yards, including Rahmaan (62), Trevon Saunders (106) and Shemar Hooks (82). Hooks set up UU's first touchdown in the second quarter with a 49-yard catch and run down the UU sideline, which was keyed by huge block from Philip Dozier.

Maurice Warren Jr. carried 17 times for 68 yards against the league's top-ranked run defense. Both teams were held to under 100 rushing yards on the night.

UU's defense continued its strong play with four sacks, led by linebackers Duray Hall (eight tackles, sack) and Josh Dillard (five tackles, sack). Roman Sneed and Andre Cliff each had interceptions, as the Blue Knight defense made big plays through the first three quarters to force UC into seven turnovers (five fumbles, two interceptions). A sixth UC fumble was recovered by the Golden Eagles in the end zone for a safety.

Charleston quarterback Colar Kuhns finished 16 of 31 for 225 yards, hooking up with wideout Delahoussaey on seven balls for 115 yards and a 55-yard TD.

Stat of the game:
There were a total of 10 combined turnovers including seven on the Charleston side and three giveaways by the Blue Knights. It's the first game UU has won the turnover battle this season.

Turning point:
Urbana added 12 points to go up 25-0 with under 10 minutes left in the game, following four consecutive Charleston turnovers which included a safety.

It was over when:
The Blue Knights held on for the victory as the clock expired while UC's Kuhn scampered for a touchdown to make it a four-point game.

What they said:
"First off, I'd like to thank the Urbana University administration and our Athletics staff for getting the information out.," said head coach Tyler Haines. "It's huge for us to have the amount of support that we've received from the local communities and the University.

We're happy to get our third in a row. It's an honor to play under the lights for the first ever home night game and to come away with a win is huge for our program.

I'm not satisfied at all with the overall play, especially the second half. I thought we were dominant in the first half but the second half was kind of like we were hanging on. We did enough to win, but there were a lot of teachable moments."

Up next:
Urbana travels to UVa-Wise a week from Saturday on Oct. 7. Kickoff in Wise, Virginia is slated for noon ET.
