Late Goal Dooms Urbana in Night Debut

Box Score

URBANA, Ohio -- In the first-ever game under the lights at Urbana University Stadium, the Blue Knights women's soccer team dropped a heartbreaker when the University of Indianapolis' Michele Govern found the back of the net with 46 seconds remaining for a 1-0 Greyhounds victory.

In the first half, it was a back and forth affair with few opportunities for either side. Urbana was outshot 6-2, with sophomore goalie Katherine Beech making an impressive save on an attempt by UI's Heather Roeder. Freshman Alyssa Edwards had the Blue Knights' best opportunity, but her shot went wide of the net.

Edwards got the action going early with a breakaway four minutes into the half, but a save by Aracely Turcios preserved the tie for UI.

Beech made 10 saves on the night, many of which in spectacular fashion near the end of the game before Govern finally broke through for the Greyhounds.

Edwards finished with three shot attempts while fellow first-year Blue Knight Madison Curtner had the other two, including the lone shot-on-goal for the Blue and Grey.

Notables:
Seven new Blue Knights made their debut in Blue and Grey, with freshmen Edwards, Brianna Nauman and Kaylee Houseman joining sophomore transfer Alyssa Garberich and senior transfer Sarah Emerson in the starting line up while freshmen Curtner and Savannah Morgan contributed as reserves.

They said it:
Urbana University coach Kevin Mounce on his team's performance and the first action for many of his freshmen players:

"You're disappointed in the result and the way it happens but I thought we fought really hard and made some adjustments at halftime. We've got to learn from it. You've got to play 90 minutes. We lost a mark in the last minute and good teams will make you pay for that."

On Beech, the sophomore goaltender:
"Katherine had a great game. She stood in there and played well. She had a great freshman year and I think she's poised to be one of the better goalkeeprs in the league. We gotta give her some help and finish our chances when we get them. I thought she did a great job and I thought our defense did a great job."

What's next?
The Blue Knights will look to rebound Tuesday against MEC rival Notre Dame College at 1 p.m. at UU Stadium.
