Blue Knights Drop Slugfest to Rams

Shepherd escapes with weekend series win

URBANA, Ohio - The Urbana University baseball team fell twice in Sunday's doubleheader to visiting Shepherd, 6-3 and 19-17, at Blue Knight Baseball Field. The Rams claimed the series win after taking three out of four from the Blue Knights over the weekend.

Records Update
After picking up a win Saturday against the MEC North Division leading Rams, Urbana lost twice on the same day for the first time in four weeks. UU now stands at 12-19 overall and 6-10 in conference play. Shepherd improved to 14-2 in league play (17-14 overall).

Game 1
UU's ace Jackson Everman exited early with an injury on the mound and the Rams took advantage with four runs in the third en route to a 6-0 lead heading to the sixth. The Blue Knights staged a late push by scoring once in the sixth and twice in their final at-bat, but couldn't finish the comeback.

Second baseman Damario Brown put the Knights on the board with a solo home run in the sixth, an opposite-field shot, for his second long ball of the year. Brown's blast was also the only run-producing, extra-base hit of the game.

With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Brown, Brent West, and Nick Gallagher stroked three consecutive base knocks to plate UU's final pair of runs. Conner Coy also had two singles in the first matchup.

Everman (3-1) was tagged with his first loss of the season while Shepherd's Ryan Pansch remained undefeated (5-0). Each team had just seven hits against opposing pitchers.

Game 2
The floodgates opened in the series finale, which took three hours and 49 minutes to play nine innings, as the two squads combined for 36 runs on 39 hits.

Holding a 17-15 lead, the Blue Knights were only three outs away from victory after overcoming a four-run deficit in the sixth. But, the Rams roped four hits and scored four runs in the top of the ninth to claim the win.

UU outhit SU 20-19, but the Rams had more extra-base hits with four doubles and three home runs.

West (3 for 5), Isac Franklin (4 for 7), and Tanner Davis (2 for 3, 2B) each produced three runs for Urbana while eight of the starting nine had at least one hit.

UU led 10-9 after five innings and then Shepherd scored five in the sixth to go on top 14-10. However, UU responded with a seven-spot to regain the lead, 17-14. Outfielder Mickey Losey had the key hit, a two-out knock to left field that pushed across the go-ahead runs.

Robbie Guerrero III took the loss on the mound while Shepherd's Ryan Simpson earned his first win after three shutout innings of relief.

Shepherd had six errors in the field in Game 2 alone, while UU had two miscues in both games.
