UU Baseball Rallies to Earn Doubleheader Split

WHEELING, W. Va. - The Urbana baseball team scored a combined 11 runs in the final inning Sunday, but was forced to settle for the doubleheader split with Wheeling Jesuit. The Cardinals took the first game 10-9 and then the Blue Knights responded with a late rally to register a 4-1 victory in the nightcap at the JB Chambers Complex.

Records Update
UU moved to 15-28 overall and 9-17 against MEC teams while WJU stands at 6-32 (5-21 MEC) on the season.

Game 1
The Blue Knights' comeback bid came up just short after trailing 10-1 and proceeding to score eight runs in their final plate appearance.

WJU's pitching struggled tremendously in the seventh, posting eight walks and one hit by pitch to allow UU back in the game. The Blue Knights scored five straight runs with the bases loaded and stranded three runners to end the game.

The Cardinals utilized a six-run fifth to jump out in front 8-1, and then limited UU to only five hits overall in the game. Senior first baseman Brent West went 2 for 5 with two RBI and junior DH Mickey Barea finished 2 for 3 with an RBI. Senior outfielder Nick Gallagher had the other hit for UU - a two-run single in the seventh.

UU right-hander Patrick Orr was charged with the loss after four innings of work on the mound. Dalton Greenwalt closed out the final two frames.

Game 2
Senior right-hander Adam Guay rolled through another opponent for his sixth win, improving to 6-1 on the year. Guay only surrendered three hits and one earned run in the seven-inning contest. He's pitched at least seven innings in four straight outings and recorded his second straight complete-game effort.

Both teams struggled to find hits and got on the board thanks to pitching miscues. Wheeling grabbed a 1-0 lead on a wild pitch in the fourth and then UU tied it when Barea scored on balk in the sixth.

UU finally broke through with a clutch hit in the seventh as Tanner Davis cleared the bases on a double to right field.

Barea produced the only multi-hit effort in the second game, while Davis, John Hale, Isac Franklin, and Damario Brown each singled.

Up Next
The Blue Knights close out the season next weekend with a four-game set against Notre Dame College. UU travels to NDC next Friday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader and then the two teams meet again Sunday at Blue Knight Field.
