Urbana Recovers to Grab Game 2 Win Over Falcons

URBANA, Ohio - Urbana baseball received a fantastic bounce-back effort on the mound to claim a 9-4 victory in Game 2 of Sunday's doubleheader against Notre Dame College. UU dropped the opener in the series 14-7 at Blue Knight Field.

Records Update
Both teams have similar records with UU now standing at 16-29 (10-18 MEC) and NDC checking in at 17-30 (12-18 MEC) on the year.

Game 1 (NDC 14, UU 7)
UU pitchers struggled to command the strike zone, allowing a season-high 11 walks in a seven-inning contest that lasted two hours and 39 minutes.

The visiting Falcons, who were the home team, jumped on UU starter Dalton Greenwalt early with five runs in the bottom of the first to go up 5-1. Greenwalt surrendered six hits, albeit a few infield knocks, but ran into trouble by tossing 39 pitches in the opening frame.

Then, Mitchell Lawson came on in relief and pitched well over the next two frames, holding NDC scoreless to provide an opportunity for the Blue Knight offense to work its way back into the game.

UU got on the board first with an unearned run and chipped away with two runs in the second, one in the third, and one in the fourth to even the score at 5-5.

However, the wheels fell off in the bottom of the fourth as the Falcons produced another five spot. The visitors would later score three in the fifth and one in the sixth to put the game out of reach.

Mickey Barea and Brent West led the Blue Knights at the plate with each recording a pair of hits. Barea reached base three times with a double, single, and hit by pitch. West finished 2 for 5 with an RBI single in the fourth.

Lawson was tagged with the loss and moved to 0-2 on the year. NDC starter Josh Armbruster picked up the win after five innings of work, improving his record to 3-7.

The Falcons outhit the Blue Knights 13-9, with both teams combining to leave 21 runners on base.

Game 2 (UU 9, NDC 4)
Right-hander Vitor Takakura turned in his longest outing of the year in his ninth start for the Blue Knights, allowing just one earned run on six hits to give UU an opportunity to gain an early lead. The junior tied his season-high strikeout total of six and allowed five walks.

West stayed hot at the plate with three more hits and two RBI, along with Barea (two RBI) and Daniel Quiroz (two RBI).

Adam Ramirez came on in relief after two straight walks to load the bases in the bottom of the fourth, and the senior right-hander escaped the two-out jam by inducing a fly out. Ramirez, who earned the win since Takakura didn't go five complete, also delivered his top performance this year with a season-high four strikeouts.

The Blue Knights led 5-2 after three by scoring two in the first and three in the third. UU then tacked on three more in the fifth, with two of those coming off a West single to center, and the final run came across in the sixth on a Bradley Burkholder fielder's choice grounder with one out.

Freshman Robbie Guerrero closed out the final two frames in his team-high 20th appearance on the bump. He allowed only two hits with a pair of strikeouts.

The Blue Knights were outhit 13-10 in the nightcap, but stranded 15 Falcons on base. UU did not commit an error while NDC was charged with three defensive miscues.
