Everman Shines in First Start

Blue Knights split Monday's twinbill at Concord

ATHENS, W. Va. - The Urbana University baseball team split Monday's doubleheader at Concord with a pair of lopsided wins on each side. The Blue Knights claimed a 10-1 victory in the first game as Jackson Everman dominated on the mound, and the Mountain Lions roared back in Game 2 with a 29-6 triumph.

Records Update
Urbana moves to 6-11 overall and 1-3 against MEC schools. Concord now stands at 9-11 and 3-1 in league play.

Game 1 (UU 10, CU 1 – 7 inn.)
Senior Jackson Everman (1-0) impressed in his first start of the season by going the distance and surrendering one unearned run on four hits. The Hilliard native got stronger as the game wore on, allowing just one hit over the final four frames; while during the same span, UU racked up 13 of its 14 hits and scored all 10 runs.

It was Everman's sixth complete game of his career as the Hilliard native moved into a three-way tie for most career wins (11) by a Blue Knight during the Division II era.

The Blue Knights trailed 1-0 after four innings while being limited to just one hit against Concord freshman right-hander Joseph Lowder (0-2). The Mountain Lions produced an RBI single in the first after a two-out infield error.

However, UU finally solved Lowder in the fifth with four consecutive one-out hits. Bradley Burkholder and Daniel Quiroz (3 for 4, RBI) singled to turn the lineup over, and then Isac Franklin delivered an RBI double to right center. Damario Brown (2 for 5, 3 RBI) followed that up with a single up the middle for a pair of runs and Connor Coy posted a two-out RBI hit later in the inning to give the Knights a 4-1 lead.

Franklin, who went 3 for 5, added another RBI knock in the sixth as the Blue and Grey kept things rolling. With two runners aboard in the seventh, Burkholder produced a sac fly to make it 6-1 with two outs. Then, the Blue Knights rattled off five straight hits, including a two-run double from Tanner Davis to cap the scoring.

The Blue Knights outhit the Mountain Lions 14-4 in the first game while both teams had one error. UU left 10 runners on base.

Game 2 (CU 29, UU 6 - 9 inn.)

The Blue Knights trailed 11-3 after three innings and the Mountain Lions continued to pour on the runs with a nine-spot in the fourth.  Concord outhit Urbana 28-10 with six extra-base hits and nine walks drawn.

Nick Gallagher, Daniel Quiroz and Bradley Burkholder led the way for UU with two hits apiece. Brent West also singled to extend his reached base streak to 21 games dating back to last season.

UU scored one in the second, two in third and three in the eighth.

Right-hander Vitor Takakura picked up the loss after a rough start (2.0 IP, 8 H, 9 ER, 5 BB). The junior dropped to 1-3 on the year.

The Mountain Lions had four players with four or more hits, while starter Nate Werner (2-0) tossed seven innings with eight strikeouts in the win.

The Blue Knights tied their season-high error total with four miscues.
