Blue Knights Fall in Pair of One-Run Games

WISE, Va. - An early lead proved not enough as Urbana University baseball stumbled twice against UVa-Wise in the conference opener for both teams Sunday afternoon. The Blue Knights fell 6-5 in the seven-inning opener and then came up short in extra innings, 13-12, in the nightcap at Stallard Field.

Records Update
With the two losses, Urbana dropped to 5-10 overall and 0-2 in the Mountain East Conference. UVa-Wise improved to 8-12 and 2-0 in league play.

Game 1
Both teams combined for only nine hits as all 11 runs were scored in the first three frames.

The Blue Knights ignited the scoring with four runs in the first on a pair of RBI hits by Brent West and Daniel Quiroz.

Then, UU led 5-2 entering the bottom of the third, but UVa-Wise's Matthew Branham tied it on one swing. The Cavs added the go-ahead run a few batters later and held on for the final four frames.

UU starter Will Keller (2-2) was tagged with the loss after struggling to find command of the zone (2.1 IP, 2 H, 6 R, 5 ER, 6 BB, 0 K, 2 HBP). Adam Guay tossed 3.2 shutout innings in relief to give UU a shot at the comeback.

West led off the fourth with a single but that was the last hit of the game for UU. He went 3 for 4 with two RBI and a double.

UVa-Wise's Dylan Luttrell earned the save after tossing three shutout innings without allowing a hit. Cavs' starter Nathan Hatmaker (2-3) picked up the win (4.0 IP, 5 H, 5 R, 3 ER,  6 BB, 4 K).

Game 2
The offense warmed up in the nightcap as both teams combined for 35 hits and 25 runs.

UU, which posted 15 hits, seemed well on its way to a victory after racing ahead 8-0 after two innings. In the first inning, UU totaled seven runs on six hits with run-producing knocks by West, Quiroz, Tanner Davis and Isac Franklin.

West kept it rolling by starting off the second inning with a solo blast, his first home run of the year, on a 2-1 pitch. The senior first baseman raised his average to .423 on Sunday with 10 doubles through 15 contests.

The Cavs got on the board with two runs in the third off UU starter Dalton Greenwalt, but the Knights countered with one in the fourth and one in the sixth for a 10-2 advantage.

Greenwalt pitched well through five frames by allowing the pair of runs on only five hits. But, the Cavs chased him after a two-out double cleared the bases and then the hosts added another run to cut UU's lead to four with the score 10-6 after six frames.

Right fielder Nick Gallagher, who registered a team-high three hits, provided a clutch two-run single to put UU ahead 12-6 in the seventh.

However, the Cavs kept chipping away and poured on six runs in the eighth against UU reliever Mitch Lawson in the right hander's first mound appearance of the season.

Colt Woolever (0.2 IP) and Robbie Guerrero (2.0 IP) preserved the tie to force extras, but the Knights never bounced back after getting stunned. The Cavs recorded a walk-off double in the bottom of the 11th to end it.

Nine batters collected a hit for UU, including Franklin, West, Gallagher, Davis, and Connor Coy each posting two or more base knocks.

Up Next
The Blue Knights continue the road trip tomorrow when they return to the diamond for a doubleheader scheduled against Concord. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. ET.
