Seventh-Ranked 'Toppers Move Past Urbana

UU falls 121-90 in home finale at Grimes Center

URBANA, Ohio - Urbana University men's basketball exchanged blows with No. 7 West Liberty Thursday night at Grimes Center, but came up short 121-90 as the 'Toppers wore down the Knights in the second half.

UU dropped to 11-16 overall (6-15 MEC) and still has a chance to qualify for the Mountain East Conference Tournament. The Blue Knights, who are tied with UVa-Wise for 10th place, need a win at Notre Dame or a Cavalier loss to Concord on Saturday to clinch the final tournament bid. The Hilltoppers improved to 25-2 (19-2 MEC).

Freshman DeQuan Abrom caught fire in the first half with 19 points and led UU in scoring with 21 points overall on 8-of-19 shooting. Jahmere Howze (17 points), Carlas Jackson (16 points) and Jimmy Weinke (16 points - career high) also reached double figures. Weinke came up with numerous big plays off the bench and hit big shots while going 7 of 8 and 2 of 2 from the beyond the arc.

UU outshot the visitors 50 percent to 48 percent across the first 20 minutes while trailing by just eight at halftime, 58-50. The Blue Knights stayed within single digits the majority of the first stanza, and took a one-point lead when Abrom's layup went through at 8:43 left in the half.

Then, the Blue Knights kept chipping away and remained within striking distance by trailing 86-76 with 10 minutes left in regulation following an AJ Washington layup.

However, the stamina of the visiting Hilltoppers outlasted the Blue Knights as West Liberty quickly went up big with a 13-0 run.

West Liberty held a forceful advantage on the boards, 46-30, and dominated the interior scoring 68-44. Both teams knocked down eight made 3-pointers.

Tipoff for Urbana's crucial game at Notre Dame Saturday is slated for 4 p.m. ET in South Euclid, Ohio.
