UU Falls 7-6 in Series Opener on Walk-Off Hit

Blue Knights suffered 7-6 setback to Ohio Valley

BECKLEY, W. Va. - After letting a 6-2 lead slip away at Epling Stadium, Urbana University baseball couldn't hold on and suffered a 7-6 defeat to Ohio Valley on a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth inning Thursday afternoon.

Prior to the final inning, Ohio Valley tied the game at 6-6 on an inside-the-park home run with no outs in the eighth inning.

Urbana drops to 1-3 overall after the setback in the series opener against the Fighting Scots, who moved to 2-5. Both squads will meet for a doubleheader Friday at the neutral site location with first pitch of Game 1 slated for noon.

Designated hitter Mickey Barea led UU at the plate, going 2 for 5 with a career-high four runs-batted in. After the Knights went down 2-0, the junior plated a pair in the fourth on a double to left center with the bases juiced, which tied the score at 2-2. He then came up big again with a two-out single that scored two more in the next inning to put UU ahead 5-2.

Third baseman Connor Coy continued his hot start to the season with his first three-hit game of his career (3 for 4) while adding a double in UU's big fifth inning. Right fielder Nick Gallagher produced two hits, including a double, while shortstop Isac Franklin recorded an RBI single.

Right-hander Dalton Greenwalt earned his first start of the season on the mound and tossed a solid five innings of work. The senior surrendered two unearned runs on five hits while striking out three and walking two batters.

Dylan Sheffer (2.1 IP), Colt Woolever (0.2 IP) and Robbie Guerrero III each made an appearance on the mound. After closing out the eighth, Woolever allowed a leadoff double in the ninth before Guerrero surrendered the game-winning hit to the first batter he faced.

Ohio Valley claimed a 2-0 lead on a pair of unearned runs in the second and UU tied the score on Barea's double in the fourth. UU added four in the fifth to go up 6-2, but the Scots answered with two in the sixth, two in the eighth and the final run in the ninth.

The Scots outhit the Blue Knights 14-9, led by shortstop Charles Emery and DH Nicholas Villazon as each produced three knocks. OVU reliever Matthew Carey picked up the win, despite allowing four runs, after tossing five innings out of the bullpen. Starter Nicholas Shower gave up four hits, two runs and five walks while striking out a pair.

UU left 10 runners on base for the second time in four games and OVU stranded nine.
