Urbana's Halftime Lead Vanishes Against Concord

URBANA, Ohio - Urbana University men's basketball led by as much as 10 in the first half and went up seven at halftime, but let the lead slip away in a 98-91 loss to Concord Thursday evening in Grimes Center.

Sophomore Jahmere Howze and freshman DeQuan Abrom each poured in 22 points to lead the Blue Knights in scoring against the Mountain Lions. Abrom finished 8 for 8 at the free-throw line and grabbed eight rebounds. Junior Dalton Payton went 3 of 4 from three-point range to finish with 15 points while junior Carlas Jackson managed 12 points despite an off-shooting night.

The Blue Knights shot 53 percent in the opening stanza and grabbed a 34-24 lead on a pair of Abrom free throws with 7:33 left until halftime. UU held on to the advantage and eventually went ahead 49-42 at the break.

However, Concord came storming out of the locker room with a 12-3 run and gained a 54-52 lead with 17:27 remaining.

Then, the two teams went back-and-forth over the next several minutes. Ethan Snapp drilled a long-range 3-pointer to give UU a 61-58 lead with 12:58 to go. But UU struggled after that and only converted two field goals over the next four minutes.

Meanwhile, Concord continued to make shots and built an insurmountable 13-point lead, 78-65, with 8:38 left. Payton hit two big three's late in the game to get within five points, but that was as close as the Knights would get.

The Mountain Lions were led by Aaron Miller's game-high 27 points (13 of 14 free throws) and a 23-point effort from Tommy Bolte. CU shot 47 percent overall and limited the Knights to 35 percent in the second half and 44 percent overall.

In total, there were 49 fouls called in the physical contest. Concord went 26 of 32 at the line and Urbana finished 23 of 30.

Urbana returns to the home court inside Grimes Center for Saturday's "Blackout" game against UVa-Wise at 4 p.m.
