UU Empty-Handed After Resilient Road Effort

Blue Knights fall to Golden Eagles, 79-65

CHARLESTON, W. Va. – Playing without two of its leading scorers, Urbana University men's basketball tried to rely on the three ball against Charleston Wednesday night but came up short, 79-65, inside Wehrle Arena.

UU falls to 9-12 overall and 4-11 within the Mountain East Conference. Charleston improved to 11-0 all-time against the Blue Knights while moving to 12-9 (6-9 MEC) on the year.

Three Knights scored double figures led by freshman DeQuan Abrom's 16 points and team-high eight rebounds. Freshman Ethan Snapp drilled a career-high five treys (5 of 11) and tied his best scoring output with 15 points in 18 minutes. Junior Carlas Jackson also scored 15 points on the night.

UU equaled its second-highest mark for made 3-pointers this season as 14 of 22 made shots were from beyond the arc.

Although limited to just 33-percent shooting overall, the Knights stayed within striking distance most of the way. Back-to-back layups from Abrom cut UU's deficit to six, 55-49, with eight minutes remaining, but the Golden Eagles had an answer for every Blue Knight threat.

Snapp's fourth 3-pointer of the night slashed the deficit back to eight points at 66-58 with 3:25 left, but then UC responded immediately with a trey and stayed in front by double digits the rest of the way.

UU displayed great fortitude after falling behind 17-3 to start the game and 22-6 at the under-10 media timeout of the first half. UU came out of that stoppage with three treys to get back in it, and trailed 37-26 at halftime.

The Golden Eagles shot 58 percent from range with 11 three's on 19 attempts while finishing with an overall shooting clip of 49 percent. Keir Anderson (19 points) and Elliott Cole (14 points) combined for nine three's, while Justin Coleman posted his league leading 13th double-double (11 points, 17 boards).

UC prevented UU from producing an extended run by holding a 25-12 rebounding edge in the second half. The Eagles finished with an overall 44-32 advantage on the glass.

Urbana returns to action Saturday, Feb. 4, when it hosts West Virginia State at 4 p.m. ET inside Grimes Center.
