Balanced Urbana Attack Leads to Ninth Win

GLENVILLE, W. Va. - Six players reached double figures in the scoring column to lead Urbana University men's basketball past Glenville State 96-85 Thursday evening in the Waco Center.

With the victory, UU snapped a four game losing streak and improved to 9-10 (4-9 MEC) on the year. The Blue Knights, who have now surpassed their win total from the previous three seasons combined, avenged an earlier loss to Glenville State on Jan. 5 (87-78).

DeQuan Abrom led the balanced UU offensive attack with 21 points on 7-of-15 shooting, recording his fifth 20-point outing in his freshman campaign. Dalton Payton put up 17 points and knocked down three treys, while Carlas Jackson scored 16 and Charles Sweatt-Washington had 13. AJ Washington (5-of-6 shooting) and Jimmy Weinke (team-high eight rebounds) each chipped in with 10 points.

UU shot especially well in the opening half with a mark of 58 percent (18 of 31), as the Blue Knights finished 51 percent from the field overall with 34 made field goals and six 3-pointers. UU also held the slight advantage on the boards (36-33) and points in the paint (48-46).

Glenville State (8-9, 4-8 MEC) was led by Brett Morris' game-high 25 points and nine boards. The Pioneers also received a 23-point effort from Jon Dunmyer, while shooting 53 percent as a team.

The Pioneers opened the game with a 2-0 lead, but UU quickly countered with a trey from Jackson and led the rest of the way.

A Payton 3-pointer with 5:30 left in the first half extended UU's lead to 10 points, 25-15, and then Abrom drained a deep ball right before the buzzer to put the Knights ahead 42-32 at the break.

The two teams continued to trade baskets after intermission and UU held on to an 11-point lead at the first media timeout, 52-41.

Then, UU's Sweatt-Washington went on a 7-0 run himself to force another Pioneer timeout a minute later. The junior forward ignited the spurt with an old fashioned three-point play and made layups on back-to-back possessions to give UU a 59-41 lead.

Two free throws from Aarmanni Garnett made it a 20-point game, 61-41, and UU cruised the remaining 13 minutes of the contest. The lead swelled to as much as 24 following a basket from Washington with 9:32 left in regulation.

It was the third UU win over the Pioneers in the all-time series between the two schools (3-8).

Urbana returns to action on Saturday against West Virginia Wesleyan in Buckhannon, West Virginia (7:30 p.m. tipoff).
