Gritty Knights Pull Out Another Last-Second Win

Abrom's layup with five seconds left gives UU 73-71 win at Concord

ATHENS, W. Va. – Urbana University men's basketball won its second straight game on its final possession as DeQuan Abrom's layup with five seconds left pushed UU past Concord 73-71 Tuesday night on the road. It's the first time UU has recorded back-to-back road victories since 2011.

UU (8-6, 3-5 MEC) features a roster without seniors, but the Blue Knights have displayed excellent poise over the past week to capture three out of their past four contests, as well as six out of the previous seven matchups.

Forward Jahmere Howze led UU scorers with 16 points and six rebounds, while Carlas Jackson and Dalton Payton reached double figures with 10 points each. Charles Sweatt-Washington chipped in with nine points in 15 minutes and Abrom scored eight.

Both sides were evenly matched in a game that featured 12 ties and 11 lead changes. Concord closed the first half on a 11-1 run to take a 35-32 lead at halftime, and then the second half saw multiple runs from each side.

Howze capped a 7-0 run on a layup to give UU a 62-60 lead with 5:45 left in the game. Then, Ethan Snapp's 3-pointer with 1:37 to go put UU ahead 69-68 to set up the dramatic finish.

Concord (5-9, 1-7 MEC) tied the game at 71-71 on a trey with 29 seconds left, setting up the final play from Abrom who drove the left side of the paint and split the defense to finish at the rim.

It was the first time UU conquered the Mountain Lions in the seventh meeting between the two schools.

TURNING POINT: UU trailed by as much as 11 in the early going of the second half, but clawed its way back to claim its first lead since four minutes before halftime on Howze's bucket with 5:45 remaining.

BACK TO BACK: The Blue Knights have captured back-to-back MEC road wins for the first time in school history. The pair of road victories are the first since 2011 (at Chicago State, 59-55; at Malone, 68-67).

LEADERS:
POINTS: Jahmere Howze – 16
REBOUNDS: Jahmere Howze, Carlas Jackson, AJ Washington – 6
ASSISTS: Dalton Payton, Jimmy Weinke – 2
STEALS: Tyler Ellis – 2
BLOCKS: AJ Washington, Tyler Ellis – 1

SNAPP-SHOT: Freshman shooting guard Ethan Snapp broke an 0-for-11 streak from beyond the arc with a clutch trey at the end of the game. Snapp also had a key basket near the end of Sunday's win at UVa-Wise.

HOWZE THAT FOR YA: Jahmere Howze led UU in scoring for the sixth time this season and third time in four games. The Blue Knights are 5-1 when Howze leads the way in points.

COACH SUMMERS' COMMENTS: "This was an eye-opening road trip for us. As a team, we went into hostile territory and found a way to win. I'm incredibly proud as a coach to watch this team learn how to grind it out and win close games. It's always hard to win on the road, let alone in back-to-back games. You can just see what type of team we are becoming."

UP NEXT: The Blue Knights will entertain Shepherd (Saturday) and No. 2 Fairmont State (Monday) at the Grimes Center this weekend. Both games are scheduled for 4 p.m. tipoffs.
