Urbana Lets Game 2 Slip Away in Doubleheader Defeat

URBANA, Ohio - The Urbana baseball team suffered a pair of losses against Notre Dame College on Friday afternoon by final scores of 15-1 and 13-10. The pair of league games wrapped up the home portion of the Blue Knight schedule, while UU celebrated its seven seniors during a pregame ceremony at UU Baseball Field.

Urbana (19-27, 13-17) and Notre Dame College (25-23, 18-12) will close out the regular season with another doubleheader scheduled for Sunday afternoon. With conference tournament implications on the line, the two squads will kick things off at All Pro Freight Stadium (Avon, Ohio) with a 1 p.m. first pitch.

Game 1
The visiting Falcons jumped all over Urbana with 13 runs on 13 hits in the opening two frames. UU starter Austin Mace (1.2 IP, 9 ER), one of the top pitchers in the Mountain East Conference this season, struggled to get outs as he never really showed a feel for his command in the windy conditions.

The Blue Knights were limited to only five hits against Notre Dame's Jake Welch, who didn't allow an earned run as UU's only score came in the fourth on a throwing error.

Senior designated hitter Enmanuel Lopez reached base four times on three walks and single. Four others recorded a hit for the Blue Knights.

Brad Hall closed out the contest with a career-high 5.1 innings in relief and struck out a pair of Falcons. Hall and Mace allowed a combined 20 hits, which ties the most hits given up by UU pitchers this season.

Game 2
The Blue Knights responded nicely in the nightcap and built a 9-2 advantage after plating six runs in the fourth. However, things came crashing down in the late innings as the Falcons rallied with six runs of their own in the top of the ninth.

UU starter Dalton Greenwalt gave an outstanding effort on the mound and exited the game in line for the win. The junior right hander pitched into the seventh and recorded his fourth straight outing with at least 6.1 innings of work, while recording four strikeouts, four walks, and surrendering eight hits.

DJ Collins collected a career-high four hits and extended his record streak for reaching base safely to 48 consecutive games. Lopez led the way by producing three RBIs, including a two-run double in the third which makes him tied for 10th in UU single-season history for most doubles.

The Falcons grabbed the lead with a run in the first, but the Blue Knights claimed their first advantage on three runs in the third. Brent West registered his first of two RBI singles prior to the Lopez double.

After NDC cut the UU lead to 3-2 in the top of the fourth, the Blue Knights put up a six spot with RBI base knocks from Damario Brown, West, and Collins. Lopez drew a bases-loaded walk and then UU manufactured the final two runs of the inning when West stole home on a pickoff attempt to first and an NDC error.

UU eventually built a 10-4 lead going to the seventh, but struggled to keep the pressure on the visitors with only two hits after the big fourth inning. The Falcons never went away and eventally gained momentum after scoring once in the seventh and twice in the eighth before the big ninth.

Still holding on 10-9 with two outs in the ninth, the Blue Knights seemed to have the game in hand after an infield pop fly. Unfortunately, the play was not made in front of the pitcher's mound and the Falcons tied it up on a wild pitch in the next at-bat.

NDC kept its foot on the gas and produced three consecutive RBI hits to completely deflate the Blue Knights.

The Blue Knights will need to try and come away with a pair of wins on Sunday to keep their postseason hopes alive.
