Urbana Seniors Give Solid Effort in Final Games

AVON, Ohio – The Urbana University baseball team closed out the season with a pair of two-run losses to Notre Dame College on Sunday. The Blue Knights fell 4-2 in the first game and dropped the second contest by a 9-7 margin.

Urbana finished the regular season 19-29 overall and 13-19 in MEC play, and has been knocked out of the race for a league tournament bid.

Game 1 (Box Score)
The Blue Knights took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Enmanuel Lopez's bases-loaded single, but failed to produce another run the rest of the way.

Lopez reached base four times, going 2-for-2 with two walks while junior first baseman Nick Gallagher went 2-for-3 to combine with Lopez for four of UU's six total hits against NDC's Cam Fuller.

UU had chances to move runners with seven walks but ended up stranding 11 runners.

Reliever Mitchell Lawson was tagged with the loss after giving up three runs in four innings. Starter Jackson Everman was pulled after two frames (2 H, 1 ER).

Game 2 (Box Score)
Making his second start in three days against the Falcons, UU starter Austin Mace recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts and tied the school record by tossing his eighth complete game on the year.

The senior right hander overcame an early 7-1 deficit and quieted the Falcon bats to open the door for a UU comeback.

Center fielder AJ Finlay recorded a season-high four hits in his final game, including an RBI triple in the third. First baseman Brent West immediately followed with an RBI base knock and it was 7-3 Falcons.

The Blue Knights continued to chip away with two more in the fourth and then Finlay came up big with a game-tying single in the sixth to make it 7-7.

Mace continued to work efficiently on the mound and got two outs in the eighth. But that's when disaster struck for the Blue Knights, as NDC pinch hitter Ross Barker mashed a two-run homer to put the Falcons up for good.

Despite the tough ending, it was a brilliant career for Mace. He also finished second in single-season school history for most starts (14) and strikeouts (85).

Damario Brown was a solid contributor at the plate, going 3-for-5 with an RBI. Also, Tanner Davis went 2-for-3 for a multi-hit effort.

Both teams produced 12 hits and left nine runners on base.
