Urbana Takes Two at Fairmont, Keeps Pace in MEC

FAIRMONT, W. Va. - Urbana picked up two more league wins after moving past Fairmont State 10-1 and 8-4 in Saturday's twinbill. The Blue Knights and Falcons will continue their series with another 1 p.m. doubleheader tomorrow afternoon in Fairmont.

The Blue Knights have won six of their previous seven games and will look to continue its climb in the MEC standings. UU improved to 16-22 overall and 10-12 in league play following Saturday's sweep, and finds itself in a three-way race for two MEC Tournament bids.

West Liberty, who UU took three out of four from last week, holds on to the third spot at 11-12. Urbana and Wheeling Jesuit are tied for fourth entering Sunday's action at 10-12. The Cardinals split against Notre Dame College on Saturday. UU and Wheeling also play each other next weekend in Urbana for what should be another crucial series.

Game 1
UU starter Austin Mace continued his dominant string of outings with another complete-game effort and victory on the hill. After giving up a sac fly in the first, Mace found his groove and shut down the Falcons with seven strikeouts and five hits allowed.

The senior right hander improved to 6-3, which makes him tied for the eighth-most wins in season by a Blue Knight. He also moved into a fifth-place tie for complete games (six) and third-place tie for strikeouts (69) in a season. Two more punchouts will give him sole possession of second place.

Tim Feasel's RBI double down the right-field line tied the game at 1-1 in the third, and then UU brought six across in the fourth to take control. Connor Coy, Bradley Burkholder, and Brent West each provided an RBI single during the big inning.

AJ Finlay and Damario Brown also delivered RBI base knocks later on to give the Blue Knights plenty of insurance. Feasel's RBI sac bunt in the fifth tied his career high for runs produced in a game with three.

Mickey Barea led the way at the plate with three hits in the first game and improved his team-high average to .393 on the year. The sophomore third baseman has hit safely in 15 of the past 17 games with eight multi-hit efforts.

Seven of the eight other starters registered a base knock as Urbana outhit Fairmont 10-5.

Game 2
Urbana came up with four runs late to break open a tightly-contested matchup.

Both teams jumped on the board with three runs in the first and one in the third to make it a 4-4 ball game. It stayed that way until the seventh, when UU took the lead on a pair of runs and then added two more in the eighth.

After a rough start, UU right hander Dalton Greenwalt kept his poise and worked seven solid innings for the Blue Knights. It was a career-long outing for the junior, who earned his second win of the season.

Greenwalt began the eighth and surrendered a leadoff single. Reliever Adam Ramirez immediately took over and slammed the door shut by retiring the final six batters in a row.

West and Enmanuel Lopez both had impressive showings at the plate. The duo got the scoring started with two RBI singles in the first inning, and ultimately finished with three hits and two RBI apiece. West connected on two doubles and Lopez added one two-bagger, raising his team-and-career-high total to 14 doubles on the year.

Barea drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 3-0 in the first, but the Falcons responded with three runs of their own to even the score at 3-3.

DJ Collins gave Urbana its second lead of the game on his third-inning RBI single. With that hit and a walk in Game 1, Collins extended his reached-base streak to an incredible 40 consecutive games dating back to 2015.

Fairmont tied the score again in the bottom of the third and it remained 4-4 through six innings.

Once again, it was the clutch performance of UU's leading hitter that put the Blue Knights ahead for good - a common occurance this season. Barea singled home Lopez in the seventh, after Lopez led off the frame with his double, to make it 5-4. An error kept the inning alive and three batters later, Finlay knocked home Barea on a single to right field.

West and Lopez knocked in the final two runs in the eighth inning.

Brown had a quiet 2-for-4 performance at the dish in Game 2, while Coy and Feasel each connected on a single.
