Sunday Sweep Leads to Series Win for Blue Knights

URBANA, Ohio - Urbana came out with a series win over West Liberty this past weekend, sweeping the Hilltoppers in Sunday's doubleheader by final scores of 10-6 and 9-3 at UU Baseball Field.

With the pair of wins, UU climbed within two games of West Liberty for third place in the MEC North Division. The Blue Knights improved to 14-22 overall and 8-12 in league play, while the Hilltoppers moved to 21-14 and 10-10. The top three teams from each division earn a postseason berth to the MEC Tournament. Wheeling Jesuit (10-22, 9-11) sits one game ahead of the Blue Knights for fourth place.

UU posted 25 total hits on Sunday with all but one marked down as singles. Third baseman Mickey Barea stole the show with an impressive 6-for-7 performance at the plate and also reached base two more times via walk. The sophomore came up big with a two-run single in the seventh inning of Game 2, which snapped a 3-3 tie and put the Blue Knights ahead for good.

Fellow sophomore Tim Feasel collected three hits in the second game and totaled four base knocks with three RBIs. DJ Collins also knocked in three runs, while five others recorded two RBIs on the day.

In Game 1, Tanner Davis broke the scoreless tie with an RBI double in the second inning to give Urbana the lead. The Blue Knights added one more in the second, five in the third, and two in the fourth to take a commanding 9-0 advantage.

Damario Brown capped the third-inning production with a two-run single to right, and Nick Gallagher plated the next two runs on his RBI single to left in the fourth.

The Hilltoppers finally got to UU starter Mitch Lawson with six runs in the fifth and the right hander ended up exiting after facing five batters in the inning. Fortunately, UU had built a comfortable enough lead and held on to give the junior his first win.

Collins provided an insurance run with an RBI single in the bottom of the fifth to make it 10-6. The hit scored Brent West who registered his team-high 15th multi-hit game on a 2-for-4 effort.

Junior Adam Ramirez slammed the door and earned his second save by holding the Toppers hitless over the final two-and-a-third.

The nightcap proved to be a tightly-contested matchup through seven innings until the Blue Knights broke through with five runs late in the game.

Leading 4-3 entering the home portion of the eighth, UU sent nine batters to the plate and strung together six hits to take control. Davis led off with a single to start the rally and then UU loaded the bases with one out. West stepped into the box next and roped a single to left field to make it 5-3 Urbana.

Then the wheels fell off for the Hilltoppers. Enmanuel Lopez followed West with a bunt single to the right side, and with nobody covering first base, the pitcher ended up throwing the ball down the line to allow two runs to score. Collins came up next and provided another big hit to plate two more, putting the Blue Knights up for good. The senior shortstop has now reached base in 38 consecutive games dating back to 2015.

Other notables include a 13-game active reached base streak for Lopez and Feasel, while Feasel extended his hit streak to seven games.

Right hander Jackson Everman earned the win in relief after making his first appearance in two weeks. Everman looked sharp on the hill, tossing four shutout innings with four strikeouts and allowing only two hits.

Ramirez started the series finale for UU and lefty Colt Woolever threw two scoreless innings of relief.
