Mace Blanks Toppers to Earn Doubleheader Split

URBANA, Ohio - Austin Mace threw a complete-game shutout to lead Urbana past West Liberty 3-0 in Saturday's first game of a doubleheader.  The Hilltoppers bounced back with a 7-0 victory in Game 2 at UU Baseball Field.

With the split, Urbana moved to 12-22 overall and 6-12 in MEC play. Visiting West Liberty is now 21-12 and 10-8 against league opponents. The two teams will close out the four-game series with a Sunday twinbill set to begin at 1 p.m. ET.

The Blue Knights outhit the Hilltoppers 9-3 in Game 1 and the visitors edged UU 11-8 in the second game.

In Game 1, left fielder Nick Gallagher put UU ahead 1-0 in the second on an RBI single. Two innings later, third baseman Mickey Barea and second baseman Damario Brown delivered back-to-back RBI singles to give UU the 3-0 advantage.

It was all Mace from there.

The right hander tossed his fifth complete game and improved to 5-3 on the year. He struck out seven and struggled a bit with three hit batters, but the senior was able to make big pitches in key moments.

Center fielder AJ Finlay and right fielder Tim Feasel led UU with two hits apiece, while shortstop DJ Collins and designated hitter Enmanuel Lopez both collected one hit.

After West Liberty's two-run home run at the beginning of the second game, Urbana stayed close through the next six frames.

Dalton Greenwalt earned his seventh start on the mound, and settled in after the early home run to pitch into the seventh. However, the right hander ran out of gas and was charged with another run in the seventh as UU fell behind 3-0. Greenwalt finished sixth-and-a-third with three strikeouts while allowing three earned runs on eight hits, two walks, and one hit batter.

The Toppers struck with one more in the eighth and two runs in the ninth to seal the win.

First baseman Brent West, Barea, and Brown led UU as each posted two hits. Lopez and Feasel registered the other two base knocks. It was the fourth consecutive game and 14th time this season that the Blue Knights stranded at least 10 runners after leaving 14 men on base.
