Urbana Racks Up 25 Hits, Falls in Pair of One-Run Games

CHARLESTON, W. Va. - The Urbana baseball team suffered a pair of heartbreaking one-run losses to Charleston at Triana Field Monday afternoon. UU surrendered a walkoff single to fall 4-3 in Game 1 and then mounted a late-inning comeback attempt in Game 2, but ultimately came up short by a final score of 11-10.

Urbana (5-13, 1-3) produced quite a day offensively with a combined 25 hits and nine doubles, including a season-high 19 base knocks in the nightcap. Third baseman Mickey Barea and outfielder Bradley Burkholder led the way with four hits each, while Barea provided a team-high four RBI on the day.

Outfielder Aaron Finlay continued his impressive start to the season by extending his hit streak to eight games. He was one of four Blue Knights with three hits against UC. In addition, the senior has now reached base in all 13 games that he has appeared in while registering a team-leading .405 batting average and .619 slugging percentage.

Damario Brown (3-6, 2 RBI), Brent West (3-8, 2 RBI), and Tanner Davis (3-7, RBI) were also key contributors at the plate.

On the mound, reliever Jackson Everman took the tough Game 1 loss and Dalton Greenwalt (3.0 IP, 6 H, 5 ER) was charged with the defeat in Game 2.

Game 1 (seven innings)
The Blue Knights were two outs away from a 3-2 victory, but the Golden Eagles came up with back-to-back singles in the bottom of the seventh to steal the win.

UU starter Mitchell Lawson worked his way out of a few jams and kept the Blue and Grey ahead going into the final frame. The righty finished six innings and surrendered three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts. He would run out of steam though, and plunked the UC leadoff man in the bottom of the seventh. That's when Everman came on with the tying run aboard and couldn't convert the save opportunity.

After tying the score at 1-1 in the third, UU took a 2-1 advantage on Barea's RBI single to right field in the fourth. UC tied the game again in the next half inning, but West put the Blue Knights ahead in the fifth after crossing the plate on a passed ball.

The Blue Knights were outhit 11-6 and left eight runners on base.

West, Finlay, and DJ Collins all recorded doubles in the opening contest.

Game 2 (nine innings)
Trailing 11-4 after five innings, the resilient Blue Knights fought back by scoring four runs in the seventh and one run in the eighth to cut the deficit to two with UC leading 11-9.

Things continued to roll UU's way after it was able to load the bases with no outs in the last stand.

Collins reached base on an infield error to start the rally and then West was hit by a pitch. Davis, who recently returned to the lineup from injury, came through with a timely single to left to fill the bases. After a UC pitching change, Finlay produced a sacrifice fly to make it 11-10, but the next two batters went down swinging to end the game.

UU was able to climb back on four hits and four runs in the seventh. Lopez smashed a bases-loaded double for two runs, followed by two consecutive RBI singles by Barea and Brown. Barea also drew a bases-loaded walk in the eighth for another run.

The Blue Knights outslugged the home team 19-12, but UU also stranded a season-high 15 runners.

Lopez and Finlay each had two doubles to lead the attack.

RHP Adam Ramirez dazzled in relief, tossing three shutout innings and striking out five UC batters.
