Urbana Sweeps UVa-Wise in Home Opener

URBANA, Ohio - Urbana (7-13, 3-3) opened up play on its home field with a doubleheader sweep over UVa-Wise (10-11, 0-6) in cold weather conditions Friday afternoon. The Blue Knights mounted a late-inning comeback for a 6-5 walk-off win and followed that up with a 12-3 drubbing of the Cavaliers in the nightcap.

The Blue Knight offense posted solid numbers Friday with a combined 24 hits.

The top of the order continues to impress after Damario Brown and DJ Collins led the way with five hits apiece. Both players have now reached base in 17 straight games with an eight-game hitting streak.

Designated hitter Enmanuel Lopez produced four hits with three of those going for extra bases. Bradley Burkholder got back on track with three base knocks and Aaron Finlay also registered three hits with a team-high four RBI. Finlay has reached safely in 15 straight games and holds a team-best 10-game hitting streak.

Tanner Davis reached base five times via walk and every starter scored at least once during the twinbill.

Game 1 (Box Score)
Connor Coy delivered a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the eighth to complete the impressive comeback in Urbana's second extra-inning contest this season. UU trailed 5-1 entering its final at-bat in the seventh, but the resilient Knights eventually solved UVa-Wise starter Steve Klaiber with four runs on five hits - all with no outs.

Klaiber had allowed just three hits with six strikeouts through six frames. However, the top three hitters in UU's lineup - Brown, Collins, Finlay - each singled to force Klaiber's exit with UU down 5-2. Davis walked to load the bases after the pitching change and West followed with an RBI single to make it 5-3. Gallagher then provided another clutch single to center, knocking in two runners to even the score at 5-5 and forcing extra innings.

UU brought on Adam Ramirez in the eighth and he allowed two hits but stranded both runners to keep the game tied. The junior righty was credited with his first win as a Blue Knight.

Starter Austin Mace went seven innings and struck out six. He gave up five runs, with three of those coming in his last inning, on eight hits. The visitors got to the senior with timely hitting in the seventh along with two well-played bunts.

Wise jumped ahead with a run in the first and then UU tied it on Brown's RBI single in the fifth. The Cavs regained the lead in the sixth with another RBI single.

Reliever Ty Lighton was dealt the loss after tossing 1.2 innings in relief.

Game 2 (Box Score)
The Blue Knights hit through the lineup and scored seven runs in the second to go up early in the nightcap. From there, UU cruised to victory by adding a run in the third and four more in the fifth.

Brown and Collins each went 3-for-4 with two runs scored in the second game. The scoring got started as Burkholder drew a bases loaded walk and then Mickey Barea was plunked in the next at-bat to go up 2-0. Brown, Collins, and Finlay immediately followed with three consecutive RBI hits.

Right hander Mitchell Lawson got the start for UU. Relievers Adam Ramirez and Colt Woolever closed out the final three-and-a-third by allowing just two hits and no runs.
