Urbana Splits MEC Opener at West Virginia State

INSTITUTE, W. Va. - Urbana (5-10, 1-1) opened up Mountain East Conference play with a doubleheader split at West Virginia State Friday afternoon. The Blue Knights took the first game by a final score of 7-2 and then dropped a close second game to the Yellow Jackets 4-3 at Calvin L. Bailey Field.

Damario Brown, DJ Collins and Aaron Finlay led the Blue Knights with four hits apiece on the day. Finlay also dropped his first long ball of the season in Game 2. Brent West and Enmanuel Lopez recorded three hits, while Tanner Davis, Nick Gallagher and Mickey Barea each provided two base knocks.

Game 1 (seven innings)
The Blue Knights pounded out 15 hits and used a four-run third inning to build a 5-0 lead over WVSU.

Six of those hits came in the third, including five straight with one out to knock WVSU starter Eric Roberts out of the game. Damario Brown singled on a bunt to start the rally and moved to second on a DJ Collins sacrifice. Brent West followed with an RBI single and then Tanner Davis, Aaron Finlay, Nick Gallagher and Enmanuel Lopez also singled.

UU starter Austin Mace surrendered two runs in the bottom of the third, but otherwise put together another solid outing. The senior righty tossed a complete game while giving up six hits, two walks and recording eight strikeouts.

Gallagher and Lopez posted back-to-back RBI singles in the fifth to put UU ahead 7-2.

Game 2 (nine innings)
Trailing 3-0 after two innings, Urbana fought back and tied the game at 3-3 with two outs in the top of the eighth. The comeback came up short though, as the Yellow Jackets were able to push a run across in the bottom half and held on in the ninth.

Jackson Everman, the reigning MEC Pitcher of the Week, provided a brilliant effort and was not charged with an earned run during his second straight complete-game outing. Unfortunately, the junior righty was tagged with the loss after UU left 10 on base.

Urbana added a run in each of the fourth, sixth and eighth innings. Gallagher plated the first run on a sacrifice fly and Finaly blasted his first home run of the season, a solo shot in the sixth, to make it 3-2 WVSU. Finlay also scored the game tying run in the eighth on a WVSU error.

WVSU outhit UU 10-9 and each team committed multiple errors on defense. Curtis Johnson picked up the relief win for the Yellow Jackets.

Up Next
Urbana's originally scheduled Sunday doubleheader at Charleston has been moved back to Monday afternoon. First pitch between the Blue Knights and Golden Eagles is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET. UU will then play its home opener next Friday against UVa-Wise.
