Blue Knights Take Three Out of Four at Kentucky State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 FRANKFORT, Ky. - Urbana split Saturday's doubleheader at Kentucky State and clinched the first series win of the season by taking three out of four games over the weekend.

Urbana (4-10) scored three runs to break a 3-3 tie in the seventh inning of Saturday's first game to edge the Thorobreds by a final count of 6-3. In the nightcap, UU sat five outs away from a sealing a weekend sweep, but a late KSU comeback downed the Blue Knights 7-6 and snapped a three-game win streak.

Game 1 (seven innings)
Kentucky State got on the board first with a run in the second inning off UU starter Mitchell Lawson. After surrendering a leadoff double, a passed ball and wild pitch ended up bringing around the KSU runner to give the home team a 1-0 lead. Lawson gave up another run in the third, but settled down by tossing a sturdy 5.2 innings with three strikeouts.

The Blue Knights took a 2-1 lead in the top of the third, before KSU knotted the score in the bottom half. Connor Coy and Adam Ramirez singled to reach base and were knocked in by DJ Collins and Brent West on back-to-back, two-out hits.

Both teams then added a run in the fifth to keep the score tied. Damario Brown stayed hot at the plate with a leadoff double to set the stage for West, who also doubled to bring home Brown. The pair of doubles were the only extra-base hits of the contest for Urbana.

After stranding the go-ahead run at third base in the sixth, the top of the order came through for the Blue Knights with three runs in the seventh. Collins singled and West reached via walk, followed by another single off the bat of Aaron Finlay to load the bases with one away. Senior designated hitter Enmanuel Lopez came up big in the next at-bat with a single to plate a pair of runs and Nick Gallagher immediately followed with a single to score another.

UU reliever Brad Hall picked up the win from the mound, his first of the season, after closing out the final inning and a third.

The Blue Knights totaled 12 hits, including two apiece from West (2 RBI), Lopez (2 RBI), Gallagher (RBI), and Coy.

Full stats from the weekend series will be made available on Sunday, including the final numbers from Saturday's nightcap.

Urbana will travel to West Virginia State and Charleston next weekend to kick off the conference portion of its schedule.
