CHILLICOTHE, Ohio – Urbana baseball fell twice to Findlay in Sunday's non-conference doubleheader at V.A. Memorial Stadium, 6-0 and 11-7.
UU (1-6) dropped the series with the Oilers three games to one after blowing a four-run lead in the weekend finale.
The Blue Knights tallied just 10 hits combined on Sunday and were outhit 46-22 overall in the series.
In Game 1, Findlay left-hander Anthony Kyle (1-0) tossed a four-hit shutout in his first start of the year. The sophomore allowed just one hit through five innings while recording eight strikeouts and one walk.
Urbana right-hander
Tyler Bess (0-2) threw well in his second start, but fell victim to three errors. The junior from Cincinnati went five innings with three strikeouts, eight hits and one walk.
Only two of Findlay's six runs were earned, which came off a two-run home run by Austin Rawlins in the first inning.
The Oilers scored again in the second and tacked on three more in the fourth.
Four Blue Knights singled including
Chase Carney,
Griffin Stevens,
Tyler Dellerman and
Cam Jenkins.
Chase Jessee tossed a perfect inning in relief.
In Game 2, Urbana jumped out to a 4-0 lead on three hits as eight batters were sent to the plate in the first inning.
However, the Blue Knights would only notch three hits the rest of the game.
Findlay tied the game at 4-4 with three runs in the top of the fourth, but Urbana responded in the bottom half as
Will Eversole came around to score on a wild pitch.
The Oilers tacked on three more runs in the fifth, one in the sixth and three in the seventh. But, Urbana found a way to stay within a run until the final frame.
Dellerman led off the bottom of the fifth with his first home run of the season, a solo shot to left field to make it 7-6 Oilers. The sophomore went 2 for 3 with a walk, two runs and pair of RBI in the second game.
Then,
Jesse Reliford led off the next inning with his first career double to left center and later scored on a sac fly by Eversole to get back within a run, 8-7.
That was as close as the Blue Knights would get before the Oilers plated a pair on Jordan Williams' triple in the top of the seventh to push the lead back up to three. Findlay got another two-out RBI knock to make it 11-7.
UU's
Brett Bell made his second start and logged four innings in a no-decision. The southpaw allowed four earned runs on six hits with three strikeouts and two walks.
Jessee (0-1) was tagged with the loss in his second relief appearance of the day.
Robbie Guerrero III and
Josh Wessler also took the mound.
Guerrero and
Justin Donovan each recorded extra-base hits at the plate, while three Blue Knight freshmen collected an RBI (Reliford, Eversole, Jenkins).
Findlay starter Trey Bame (1-0) picked up the win in four innings of work. The right-hander, who started the fifth and was pulled after the Dellerman homer, finished with two strikeouts and four walks.
UP NEXT: Urbana will travel to Frankfort, Kentucky next weekend for non-conference matchups against Northwood (MI) and Kentucky State.
