Blue Knights Drop Series Finale at Ferrum College

FERRUM, Va. - The Urbana baseball team couldn't avoid the sweep in a 14-7 setback at Ferrum College in Sunday's non-conference series finale.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Ferrum struck first with three runs in the bottom of the opening frame off UU starter Mitch Lawson, and then followed up with three runs in each of the second and third innings. Urbana's offense also got rolling in the early going, which kept the Blue Knights afloat, with a pair of runs in each of the second and third innings to make it 9-4 Panthers after three complete.

In the second inning, Aaron Finlay walked in his first plate appearance of the season and later scored on DJ Collins' RBI single for UU's first run. Connor Coy followed with an RBI single to cut Ferrum's lead to one run at 3-2, but UU missed an opportunity to pile on more runs by leaving the bases loaded.

UU pushed two more runs across in the top of the third to trim the deficit to 6-4. Brent West tripled to lead off the inning and scored on Finlay's infield single in the next at-bat. Finlay would come around on an infield error three batters later.

Ferrum would then go on to score three in the third, one in the fifth, and four in the eighth to put the game out of reach.

The Blue Knights cycled through four pitchers, while surrendering four home runs and allowing seven batters to reach on walks.

TURNING POINT
Urbana plated three runs in the top of the seventh to chip the deficit back down to three at 10-7. However, Ferrum's offense flexed its muscle in the eighth with back-to-back-to-back home runs, surging back ahead by the final score of 14-7.
