OWENSBORO, Ky. – The Urbana baseball team dropped a pair of games to Hillsdale College on Sunday by final scores of 12-10 and 13-2. Urbana (1-7) will try to snap a five-game slide with another doubleheader Monday against Kentucky Wesleyan in Owensboro.
Senior shortstop
DJ Collins led the way with four hits, including a double and one RBI, while designated hitter
Enmanuel Lopez launched his second home run to go with three hits and team-high five RBI on the day. Left fielder
Aaron Finlay also registered three hits total with an RBI.
Michael Barea and
Brent West each produced a run for the Blue Knights, as well.
In the first game, a furious rally came up short as the tying Urbana runs were left on base in the last inning. Down to the final out,
Damario Brown connected on a deep fly ball that was robbed at the warning track by a diving Hillsdale outfielder to end the game.
The Blue Knights had rallied from an eight-run deficit by plating three runs in the sixth and four in the seventh. Lopez homered to center field on a two-run shot to ignite the late-inning scoring.
UU right hander
Jackson Everman picked up the loss after being charged with six earned runs. Everman labored across four innings with five walks and one strikeout. Hillsdale's Phil Carey earned the win and Chris McDonald picked up the save.
Urbana was outhit 14-8, while leaving seven runners on base and committing two errors on defense.
The second game was all Hillsdale. The Chargers jumped out to a 6-0 lead after four innings, and then Urbana pushed two across in the top half of the fifth to trim the Hillsdale lead to four. Burkholder singled to lead off the fifth and was followed by Brown's double to put two in scoring position.
Burkholder ended up scoring on a wild pitch and then Collins knocked in Brown two batters later on a single to center.
That was it for Urbana though, as Hillsdale plated six more in the fifth, and one more in the sixth before the game was called for darkness.
Austin Mace was tagged with the loss in 4.1 innings of work. The righty struck out six, while giving up nine hits and a pair of walks.
The Blue Knights were outhit 13-6 and committed two defensive miscues in the field.
