Urbana Swept in Doubleheader at Ferrum College

Lopez connects on second career home run

FERRUM, Va. - The Urbana baseball team dropped both games in Saturday's doubleheader at Ferrum College (D-III). The Blue Knights fell 11-2 in the opener and were edged out 6-4 in the nightcap. The two teams will close out the weekend series Sunday with a matinee contest set to begin at noon ET.

In Game 1, UU (1-4) gained a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after Damario Brown came across on a balk, but Ferrum scored runs in each of the second through seventh innings to blow by the Blue and Grey. Brown was one of three Blue Knights to register three hits total on the day, which also included Bradley Burkholder and Michael Barea.

Starter Austin Mace (1-1) was dealt the loss in the opener after allowing six runs (five earned) on eight hits. The righty struck out five in five innings of work, but also walked four.

UU totaled nine base knocks in the first game, while Ferrum racked up 19 hits. UU's bullpen was touched up for 11 hits and five runs.

In his first career plate appearance, freshman Chase Colantino knocked in his first career RBI for UU's second run of the game in the eighth inning.

Ferrum's Cliff Alexander (1-1) picked up the win on the mound after tossing six innings.

In Game 2, the Blue Knights got off to a great start by jumping on Ferrum's starting pitcher Dillon Weaver for four runs in the third inning.

Conner Coy walked to leadoff the frame, and later came around on Brown's RBI single a few batters later. Brent West followed with a sacrifice fly to center to make it 2-0, and then Enmanuel Lopez delivered a two-run homer in the next at-bat to push the score to 4-0 in UU's favor. The Lopez blast was the first long ball of the season for UU and the second home run of the senior's career.

UU starter Jackson Everman had all the support he needed in the seven-inning contest, but the junior right hander's command faded in the bottom of the fourth. After striking out the leadoff man, Everman hit a batter and then walked two straight. Ferrum took full advantage of the scoring opportunity and produced back-to-back doubles to tie the score at 4-4. Sloppy defensive play allowed two more runs to score before the inning was over and that was all Ferrum would need as it took the 6-4 advantage.

The Blue Knights only had one runner reach base the rest of the game, as two Ferrum relievers combined for six punchouts in two innings. In total, Urbana stuck out 13 times in the second game.

Everman (0-2) was charged with the loss on the mound and Weaver picked up the win for Ferrum.
