Urbana Bats Come Alive to Earn Doubleheader Split

FLORENCE, Ky. - Urbana bounced back with a 12-3 drubbing of Ohio Valley to split a pair of games Saturday at UC Health Stadium. The Blue Knights, who finished 1-2 during Opening Weekend, couldn't capitalize in Saturday's first contest as OVU claimed a 3-1 triumph in extra innings.

Outfielder Nick Gallagher continued his torrid start to the season by going a combined 4 for 7 with five RBI to lead UU at the plate. The left-handed swinging junior finished the weekend with an impressive .545 average with six RBI and had two hits in each game.

Other key contributors on Saturday included first baseman Brent West and third baseman Michael Barea, who both went 3 for 3 in Game 2. Catcher Tanner Davis also recorded three hits on the day, while right fielder Enmanuel Lopez and designated hitter Dylan Sheffer had two hits apiece.

With the score tied 1-1 in the first game, Urbana stranded two runners with a chance to win in the bottom of the seventh. Gallagher started the rally with a single, but was soon picked off at first. Two batters later, Sheffer singled and Barea walked to move the winning run to second. Damario Brown came up next and hit a hard grounder to the right side, but OVU second baseman Max Brown made a sliding grab and flipped over to first for the out.

Starter Jackson Everman produced a quality outing for UU in his 2016 debut on the mound. The righty pitched into the eighth inning and struck out six OVU batters, but was charged with the loss after falling victim to timely hitting.

Right hander Adam Ramirez finished out the eighth in his first relief appearance.

The Blue Knights scored their only run on OVU starter J.R. Davis in the second frame on Gallagher's RBI double. Davis picked up a no-decision after tossing 6.2 innings with three strikeouts. OVU reliever Robbie Harper earned the win in one-and-a-third innings of work.

Each team left six runners on base, and OVU outhit UU 11-5.

In the second game, Urbana's bats finally came alive as each starter registered at least one base knock. The Blue Knights also plated at least one run in every inning but the first.

Senior Austin Mace was solid in his first start on the mound, allowing just four hits with four strikeouts. His only blemish was a three-run homer in the sixth. At one point, Mace retired seven straight across the middle innings.

After scoring one in the second and two in the third, UU opened the flood gates with a seven-spot after batting around in the fourth. Shortstop DJ Collins singled home the first run of the inning, followed by Davis' RBI double to make it 5-0. Two batters later, Gallagher came through again with a bases-loaded single to right for two more. Another pair of runs scored on an error, and then Barea capped the big inning with an RBI single to left.

The Blue Knights left 10 on base and committed two errors, while the Scots had five hits total with five defensive miscues.

OVU's Eric Schweitzer took the loss in Game 2.

Urbana returns to the diamond next weekend with a three-game series against Ferrum College (2-5) in Ferrum, Virginia.
