Urbana Picks Up Third Straight Win; Jackson Joins 1,000 Point Club

URBANA, Ohio - Carlas Jackson became the third Blue Knight to eclipse the 1,000 point mark since 2006, as Urbana University men's basketball defeated Miami-Middletown 94-82 inside the Grimes Center on Monday night.

UU (5-5) earned its third straight win and reached the .500 mark through 10 games for the first time since 2012-13. The visiting Miami-Middletown squad fell to 8-7 overall on the year.

Jackson, a junior who played in his 65th career game, scored his 1,000th point early in the second half and netted 14 overall in the contest.

Freshman DeQuan Abrom led the Knights in scoring with a game-high 24 points on 10-of-15 shooting, reaching double figures for the seventh consecutive outing. The guard is averaging 23 points during the win streak while leading the team in scoring for each game. He also stuffed the stat sheet Monday night with six rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Three others recorded double figures in scoring, including Jahmere Howze (21 pts), Aarmanni Garnett (13 pts) and Tyler Ellis (12 pts - career high). Both teams had five players score 10 or more in this one.

UU withstood a gutsy performance from the visitors and showed resiliency in th second half to come out on top.

The visitors jumped out to a quick 7-2 lead at the beginning of the game, but the UU reserves quickly regained control as UU built a nine-point lead at the break, 42-33. The Blue Knight's depth proved to be the difference as the UU bench outscored the Thunderhawks 59-6.

 A few more gut-check moments came in the second half for the resilient Knights. The Thunderhawks clipped the lead down to one, 46-45, on a made 3-pointer four minutes into the second stanza and then stayed within single digits over the next five minutes. Then, Howze put the Knights ahead by double digits again with a jumper to make it 62-51 with 11 minutes left.

The visitors kept their effort and intensity going to get back within two possessions of UU with 2:05 remaining in regulation, but fortunately for the Knights, shots continued to fall as they were able to outlast the Hawks down the stretch to pull out the double-digit win.

UU shot 52 percent overall but made only 6 of 21 (29 percent) from beyond the arc. The Blue Knights struggled a bit on the boards and were out-rebounded at halftime, but finished with a 45-35 edge on the glass. UU limited the visitors to 45-percent shooting.

Both teams were sloppy with the basketball and combined for 35 turnovers and 26 steals.

Urbana will travel to Division-I opponent Ohio for another exhibition game on Dec. 30 (7 p.m.), before returning to Grimes Center on Tuesday (Jan. 3 vs. Wesleyan) and Thursday (Jan. 5 vs. Glenville State) for two league games.
