Scoring Woes Continue for Urbana in 77-79 Loss at WV Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W. Va. – The Urbana men's basketball team lost its first game of the New Year Monday night by a final score of 77-59 on the road against West Virginia Wesleyan. The loss was the seventh straight for the Blue Knights (1-9, 0-5), who return to action Wednesday night at Glenville State for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff in Glenville, West Virginia.

Sophomore guard Carlas Jackson recorded his fourth 20-point game of the season, shooting 8 of 11 overall from the floor with four 3-pointers to lead all scorers.

Senior guard Mike Newton was UU's second-highest scorer with nine points, six rebounds, and five assists. Freshman forward Austin Adams chipped in with seven points.

Both teams shot near 50 percent with the Blue Knights going 47.1 percent on field goals and 50 percent from beyond the arc (7 of 14). The Bobcats (9-2, 4-1) shot 53.1 percent overall and made only two three's on 15.4 percent from deep.

The deciding factor came at the free-throw line as West Virginia Wesleyan outscored Urbana 23-4. UU went 4 of 9 from the charity stripe and WVWC finished 23 of 32. Even with the wide margin in opportunities, the fouls were still close as the Blue Knights were only called for five more stoppages than the host Bobcats.

Another key to this one were second chance points, as WVWC outscored UU 10-0 in that category while also grabbing 10 more boards than the Blue Knights with a 36-26 advantage on the glass.

UU led by a point in the opening minute, and otherwise trailed WVWC the entire game. The Bobcat lead swelled to as much as 21 late in the second half.

Garrett Grantham led four Bobcats in double figures with 16 points, five rebounds and five assists.
