UU Football Coaching Staff Announced

URBANA, Ohio - Urbana head football coach Tyler Haines has appointed three new members to his coaching staff, naming Kevin Turco, Chris Calley and Ryan Mayfield assistant coaches for the 2015 season. Haines retained defensive coordinator Paul Smith from the previous regime, and will hire two more assistants in the coming weeks to round out the staff.

Kevin Turco, Assistant Head Coach/Offensive Line
Turco assumes the role of assistant head coach and will oversee the offensive line. He brings 15 years of coaching experience to Urbana, most recently serving the past three seasons at NCAA Division II member Northwestern Oklahoma State.

"Kevin is an excellent addition to our staff," Haines said. "He has worked at a variety of different levels, and has learned from some of the best coaches in the country.  He will develop mental and physical toughness in our offensive line."

Last season, Turco stepped in as interim head coach for the Rangers and called plays as the offensive coordinator. He served as the assistant head coach and recruiting coordinator during his first two years from 2012 to 2014.

Prior to his appointment with NOSU, he served as an assistant football coach at six universities and three high schools.

While leading the offensive line at Newberry College from 2007 through 2010, he coached numerous All-conference recipients and two All-Americans. He was also a member of two South Atlantic Conference Championships and a trip to the second round of the NCAA Division II national tournament.

In 2005, Coach Turco served as the offensive graduate assistant coach under Head Coach Skip Holtz at East Carolina University and worked with the Pirates offensive line.

In 2004, Turco assisted the Gamecocks quarterbacks and special teams as a graduate assistant coach at the University of South Carolina under the legendary Lou Holtz.

He began his collegiate coaching career at his alma mater, Western New England College in Springfield, Mass., with defensive line responsibilities. He held the same position at the University of St. Mary (Kansas) and at St. Peter's College (New Jersey).

Coach Turco also served in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged after spending his career in an infantry unit. Coach Turco holds a Bachelor's in History from Western New England University where he played football for the Golden Bears.

He also earned a Master's of Art in Education Degree from the University of Saint Mary. Coach Turco and his wife Melissa reside in the Dayton area.

Chris Calley, Defensive Backs
Calley joins the Blue Knights after spending the past year as associate head coach and defensive coordinator at Chandler Park Academy in Harper Woods, Michigan. He spent five years coaching at his alma mater Adrian College prior to that, including two seasons on the same staff as coach Haines.

"Chris brings a lot of experience to our secondary," Haines said. "He has been a part of great defenses both as a player and as a coach. He is an excellent recruiter, and will also serve as our speed development coach."

At CPA, Calley led a defense that topped the conference in points-per-game allowed and helped capture a conference title. He coached linebackers and played a major role in developing game plans for the second team in school history to reach the regional finals.

During his tenure on Adrian's staff, Calley worked with the defensive backs and shared duties as the co-defensive coordinator. He was a standout cornerback for the Bulldogs and also excelled on the track at Adrian College.

In 2012, the Bulldogs had one of the best secondaries in school history. Adrian allowed just one passing touchdown in conference play and ranked first in the MIAA and 14th in NCAA Division III in pass defense (150.55 yards per game). In addition, the team led the MIAA and were 34th nationally in pass efficiency defense (107.53). The defensive backs recorded three interceptions during league action in 2012.

In 2011, the Bulldogs again had one of the top secondaries in the MIAA and the country. Calley mentored First Team All-MIAA selection Bryan Garbarino and Second Team All-MIAA pick Keman Jacobs. Adrian ranked seventh nationally and first in the MIAA in pass efficiency defense (89.28). In addition, Adrian ranked 16th nationally and first in the MIAA in scoring defense (14.2 points per game). The pass defense for Adrian ranked 14th nationally and first in the MIAA allowing 138.2 yards per contest through the air.

Calley spent the 2010 season coaching wide receivers at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He helped produce All-American Jared Jenkins as well as two other Pointers who received First Team All-WIAC honors.

Calley was a member of the MIAA champion 4x100 meter relay team in 2006-2008 and was named First Team All-MIAA in 2007 and 2008. He broke the school record in the 200 meters and also in the 4x100 meter relay during his time at Adrian. Calley was the MIAA 400 meter champion in 2008 and was also named Male Track Athlete of the Year in the MIAA.

On the football field, Calley started all 10 games as a junior and senior. He recorded 20 tackles, three interceptions and five pass breakups as a junior and followed that with 22 tackles, one interception and eight pass breakups as a senior. He was named First Team All-MIAA as a senior.

He graduated in 2009 from Adrian College with a bachelor of arts in international business.

Ryan Mayfield, Running Backs
Ryan Mayfield, a former high school standout at nearby Shawnee High School, joins the Urbana football coaching staff as an assistant coach shortly after graduating from Cedarville University. Mayfield will draw from his coaching and playing experience to help work with the Blue Knight running backs in 2015.

"Ryan is a local product and will contribute a lot to our program," Haines said. "He is a tireless worker, and I have no doubt that our running backs will be prepared week in and week out under Ryan's tutelage."

A native of Springfield, Ohio, Mayfield most recently served as the men's power lifting coach at his alma mater Shawnee High School during the 2014-15 season.

In 2013-14, Mayfield spent time as the varsity linebackers coach at Shawnee and assisted with defensive game planning and coordinating the team's strength program. He also helped coach the Shawnee middle school football team, serving as the team's signal caller on both sides of the ball.

As a player, Mayfield originally attended Findlay on a football scholarship for the 2012 season. After transferring to Cedarville, he got involved with the athletic strength and conditioning department by working with the Yellow Jacket women's soccer team.

Mayfield had an outstanding prep career on the field. While anchoring the Shawnee defense at linebacker, he was named all-conference, all-region and all-county three consecutive years.
