Derrick Blyberg enters his fifth year at Urbana University in 2019-20. Blyberg was hired as Sports Information Director in July 2015 and promoted to Assistant Athletic Director for Athletic Communications in 2017. He was awarded the Urbana University Core Value Award for "Excellence" in 2018.
Blyberg oversees all facets of both traditional and emerging public relations and digital media duties for the athletic department. He is also responsible for managing a team of work-study student assistants.
Blyberg sits on the UU Hall of Fame Committee and the UU Scholarship Committee. He also serves as the NCAA Division II Atlantic Region Chair for the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA). Blyberg served as media host for the first NCAA Championship hosted on Urbana's campus during the men's soccer postseason run in 2016. In addition, Blyberg has volunteered at neighboring schools including the First Four NCAA Men's Basketball Championship games, hosted at the University of Dayton.
Before joining Urbana, Blyberg served as Athletic Communications Assistant at Middle Tennessee State University during the 2014-15 season. There, he was the primary contact for the 2015 Conference USA Champion and NCAA Regional qualifying MT women’s golf team, as well as the prestigious Blue Raider baseball program. Aside from day-to-day SID duties, he handled the promotion of two C-USA coach of the year award winners, six all-league performers and five player of the week honorees. He also served as the secondary contact for the men’s basketball program.
Blyberg started his professional career as the Athletic Communications Intern at the University of Toledo for the 2012-13 academic year. At Toledo, he was the primary contact for softball, tennis, cross country, track and swimming, and served as host SID for the Ohio High School Athletic Association postseason boys' basketball tournament games played at UT's Savage Arena. Additionally, Blyberg gained valuable experience from traveling to away football games with the Rockets, including the 2012 Famous Idaho Potato Bowl in Boise, Idaho.
Blyberg graduated from Taylor University in 2012 with a degree in sport management. He was a student assistant for three years in the Taylor Sports Information Office and served as the campus Student Director of Intramurals his senior year. He also assisted with covering Taylor’s famous annual “Silent Night” basketball game.
During his undergrad years, Blyberg interned with the Hamilton Joes Baseball Club of the Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League in Hamilton, Ohio. He served as the media host for the 2011 GLSCL All-Star Game played at Great American Ballpark, the home of the Cincinnati Reds.
Derrick is a native of Liberty Township, Ohio and now resides in the Dayton area with his wife, Katelyn.
