Men's Soccer Routs Wheeling, 5-1

WHEELING, W. Va. – A flurry of goals in the first half lifted Urbana University (3-3-1, 3-2-0 MEC) past Wheeling University 5-1 in Sunday's conference match at Bishop Schmitt Field.

Hass Gorji led the way with five points (2 goals, 1 assist) and Jasminko Dizdarevic notched four (2 assists, 1 goal). Leon Nelson and Afonso Vieira scored while Jake Wischmeier and Luke Nicholls each logged an assist.

Nelson, who scored his first career goal, slotted the ball to the lower right corner off a Nicholls pass in the 33rd minute. The sophomore started the possession with a steal at midfield and he was rewarded after making a hard run down the center of the pitch.

In the next minute, Vieira showed off with a flashy bicycle kick near the left post to put the Blue Knights ahead 2-0, which ended up as the game-winner. Vieira perfectly timed the bounce off of Wischmeier's deep throw from the right sideline.

Then UU put the game on cruise control and scored twice more right before halftime as Hass Gorji and Jasminko Dizdarevic exchanged goals. Gorji added a brace in the 56th minute.

Wheeling (1-5-0, 0-4-0 MEC) prevented the clean sheet by finding the back of the net in the 77th minute following a defensive mix-up by the Blue Knights.

Otherwise, UU was solid defensively and led by keeper Jakob Henriksen's three saves. The Blue Knights outshot the Cardinals 13-4 in shots on goal, paced by Gorji's team-high five attempts on frame.

WU's keeper Josh Zimmerman collected eight saves. Andres Caceres scored the lone Cardinal goal and was assisted by Javier Mangado.

UP NEXT: UU returns home on Thursday, Oct. 3, for a league match against Notre Dame College (5-2-0, 5-1-0 MEC).
