Edwards Scores Twice in Road Loss to Frostburg St.

FROSTBURG, Md. – After a 10-day layoff, the Urbana University women's soccer team returned to action Wednesday at Frostburg State University. The Blue Knights fell 6-2 in the conference opener for both teams.

UU dropped to 0-3-0 (0-1-0 MEC) on the season while FSU earned its first win to move to 1-2-1 (1-0-0 MEC).

Alyssa Edwards scored both Urbana goals in the first half for her third career brace.

After FSU moved out to an early 2-0 lead, Edwards struck in the 11th minute to make it a 2-1 game. The junior forward secured a loose ball in the box and beat two defenders after teammate Alyssa Garberich delivered a deep pass from 60 yards out.

Then, Frostburg went up 3-1 in the 16th minute but another big play near the end of the half sliced the deficit back to one.

Edwards swiped the ball from an attacker and raced down the middle of the field unmarked until reaching the penalty area, where she executed a perfect give-and-go play with Dharma Kotecha. Edwards slotted the ball to the bottom left corner to make it 3-2 Bobcats in the 39th minute.

FSU remained out in front during the second half and increased the lead on a successful penalty in the 56th minute. The Bobcats then tacked on two more goals later in the period. Brooke Shehade scored three goals for the hosts.

UU keeper Hazel Sanz was active all game and finished with 12 saves. The Bobcats overpowered the Blue Knights with a 17-4 edge in shots on goal.

UP NEXT: UU will host West Liberty University in the home opener for the Blue Knights. The conference match will start at 4 p.m. inside UU Stadium.
