URBANA, Ohio - The Urbana baseball team dropped both games of Monday's doubleheader to West Virginia Wesleyan, 9-7 & 5-2.
UU (5-18, 2-10 MEC) resumes the homestand Wednesday against Wright State-Lake (3 P.M.) while Wesleyan (12-15, 5-5 MEC) travels to Charleston on Saturday.
//Â GAME 1
UU rallied with two runs in the fourth and fifth to even the score at 4-4 going into the final two frames. However, Wesleyan tacked on five more runs, including four in the seventh, to build a 9-4 advantage.
Then, UU rallied again in its final at-bat, but the Blue Knight magic ran dry after scoring three runs and stranding the tying runs.
Junior center fielder
Chase Carney went 3 for 4 with three runs and a double to lead Urbana. Freshman first baseman
Justin Donovan also went 2 for 4 with an RBI single.
Wesleyan outhit the Blue Knights 10-9 as both clubs committed two errors in the field.
On the mound, UU starter
Logan Fisher took the loss after giving up seven earned runs in 6.1 innings of work. The freshman right-hander dropped to 0-4.
Wesleyan's Michael Maiolo improved to 4-1 while Dom Castello picked up his second save. The Bobcats were led by third baseman Antonio Vega went 3 for 4 with two doubles and triple.
//Â GAME 2
Wesleyan starter Griffin Roe struck out 10 in a complete-game outing to earn his second win of the season. The right-hander grew stronger as the game wore on, retiring 11 of the final 12 batters he faced. Seven of those were punchouts.
With the score tied 2-2, UU threatened with a leadoff, stand-up triple by
Mickey Losey in the bottom of the fourth. However, he was cut down at the plate and the Blue Knights only had two runners the rest of the game.
Carney and
Robbie Guerrero III delivered back-to-back RBI singles with two outs in the bottom of the third, but the Bobcats kept chipping away with a run scored in each of the final three innings. WVWC had gained a 2-0 lead with a run in the top half of the second and third frames.
Freshman
Hunter Cohee logged a season-high 4.2 innings in his third start. The right-hander struck out four while yielding three runs on seven hits.
