FAIRMONT, W. Va. – The Urbana University women's soccer team fell 1-0 at Fairmont State in a heartbreaking loss in double overtime.
Needing to hang on for two minutes to pick up what would have been a well-earned point, the Blue Knights came up just short in a gritty performance against the division-leading Fighting Falcons.
UU moved to 5-7-1 (5-5-1 MEC) following the setback and will have a crucial league game coming up on Wednesday. Fairmont State extended its lead in the MEC North to five points after improving to 9-4-2 (8-2-2 MEC).
Hazel Sanz played lights out for the Blue and Grey, racking up seven saves in her return to goal following a one-game absence.
The Blue Knights totaled six shots, led by
Alyssa Garberich with three attempts.
Sophia Thomas,
Kobi Bryant and
Alyssa Edwards each recorded a shot.
Fairmont netted the game-winner off a corner kick in the 108th minute. Abigail Fowler scored off the assist by Abigail Johnson.
The Falcons earned eight corner kicks while limiting the Blue Knights to none.
UP NEXT: UU hosts Frostburg State (6-8-1, 6-6-0 MEC) Wednesday afternoon with third place in the MEC North Division on the line. The Bobcats currently lead the Blue Knights by two points in the standings (18-16).
