ELKINS, W. Va. – Leon Nelson's game-winner in the 81st minute lifted Urbana University men's soccer past Davis & Elkins 1-0 Sunday afternoon. The win marks the 100th career coaching victory for
Nick Roberts.
UU improved to 7-4-2 (7-3-2 MEC) to keep pace in the conference playoff push. The Blue Knights sit two points behind third-place West Virginia Wesleyan (25) and three back from second-place Notre Dame (26) in the MEC table.
With Sunday's win, UU swept the season series over Davis & Elkins as the league newcomers dropped to 6-7-0 (5-7-0 MEC).
Nelson secured his first career game-winner and second goal of the season to cap a well-played possession by the Blue Knights.
Following a goal kick,
Marvin Zott beat a defender with a perfect header touch at midfield and fed
Luke Nicholls down the left sideline. Nicholls, who leads the Blue Knights in assists, directed a cross to the box where
Jasminko Dizdarevic brought it down, made a defender miss, and led Nelson down the right edge on a strong run.
It was the fifth assist for Dizdarevic, who ran his league-leading point total to 25.
UU goalkeeper
Jakob Henriksen had two saves and registered his third shutout.
Both teams managed just two shots on frame in a hard-fought matchup. The Senators held the edge in corner kicks, 6-4. The two sides combined for 25 fouls.
