Urbana Tops Glenville on Homecoming, 31-24

URBANA, Ohio – Urbana snapped its five-game Homecoming losing streak by holding on to defeat Glenville State, 31-24, Saturday in front of nearly 3,000 fans at UU Stadium.

With the win, UU improved to 4-2 (4-2 MEC) and remains in fourth place in the league standings. Glenville dropped to 3-3 (2-3 MEC). It was the first victory over Glenville State for head coach Tyler Haines as the Blue Knights moved to 2-5 in the all-time series with the Pioneers. The Blue Knights also snapped a nine-game losing streak in October games.

Eddie Stockett threw for a season-high 274 yards and three touchdowns to lead the offense. The senior quarterback completed a career-best 28 completions to nine different receivers. Sophomore wideout Rafael Floyd hauled a career-high nine receptions for 76 yards while seniors Justin Dennis and Jesse Bray, along with sophomore Jeff Garcia each had a receiving touchdown.

Urbana led 10-3 at halftime as Erik Ware nailed a career-long 43-yard field goal, which was followed up by Bray's 16-yard TD reception in the final minute of the half. Bray's third TD catch of the year capped a 14-play, 70-yard drive that spanned nearly six minutes.

Glenville quickly tied the game on the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, as free safety Samuel Thomas forced a sack-fumble which was recovered and returned 25 yards for a touchdown by linebacker Jose Gutierrez to make the score 10-10. It was the fourth straight game with a defensive touchdown for the Pioneers.

However, the Glenville momentum was short-lived.

UU responded as junior running back W.R. Sanders Jr. found paydirt from 10 yards out. His eighth touchdown of the year put the Blue Knights back in front, 17-10, with 7:36 left in the third. Stockett engineered the drive that lasted over seven minutes by going 5 of 6 through the air.

The Blue Knight defense forced a three-and-out but the next drive stalled in Glenville territory. Freshman punter Anthony Padovano recorded one of his two punts inside the 20 to pin the Pioneers. Two plays later, a big hit over the middle by free safety Desdamon Lake jarred the ball loose from a Glenville receiver and linebacker Joe Marshall recovered it on the GSC 38.

Following the turnover, Stockett needed just two plays to find the end zone. He connected with Floyd on a 30-yard pass which set up a 13-yard scoring strike to Justin Dennis, giving the Blue and Grey a 24-10 lead with 1:31 in the third.

UU extended the lead midway through the fourth quarter when Jeff Garcia hauled his first receiving TD on an 18-yard pass from Stockett. Garcia perfectly timed his leap to high-point the ball over two defenders. The third passing TD of the day put UU ahead 31-10 with 7:16 remaining.

But, Glenville didn't go away. Senior wideout Austin Ratliff answered with an 87-yard kickoff return, his second return TD of the season, to trim the Blue Knight lead to 31-17 with 7:01 to go.

UU's next drive ended in Glenville territory, but the Pioneers drove 88 yards with backup quarterback Jaylin McNair at the helm. McNair converted a 4th-and-12 pass to sustain the drive, and then found Ratliff on a nine-yard TD pass with seven seconds left, trimming the deficit to 31-24.

Then, Glenville recovered a perfectly placed onside kick and had one last chance, but the Blue Knights knocked down the Hail Mary attempt.

Urbana produced 361 yards of total offense while the defense limited the Pioneers to the fewest yards allowed this season with 228. The Blue Knights, who dominated time of possession with holding the ball for over 35 minutes, surrendered a season-low 12 first downs in the game. Glenville went just 1 of 12 on third-down conversions and scored just 10 points on offense.

Defensively, strong safety Chris Richardson led the way with eight tackles while defensive end Mikal Toliver recorded two sacks and four tackles. The Blue Knights had 10 total TFL, including two from linebacker LA Kelly and tackle Brandon Tiassum (sack). Defensive end Justice Alexander also had a sack and three stops.

Glenville's starting quarterback Tim Heltzel, who left with an injury, finished 12 of 25 for 104 yards while McNair went 9 of 12 for 71 yards and a touchdown. Running back Mario Pender finished with just 42 rushing yards after gashing the Blue Knights last season for over 200. Tight end Isaac Myers had seven catches for 84 yards.

Leading Glenville on defense was linebacker Dom Cizauskas with 17 tackles. Thomas finished with 10 stops while safety Dane Lynch had nine tackles.

UP NEXT: UU travels to West Virginia State University (5-1) next Saturday, Oct. 19 for a noon kickoff. The Yellow Jackets, who are riding a three-game win streak, are 5-0 in conference play following a 42-38 road win at Fairmont State.
