Swanson's Two Home Runs Lead Comeback Win

Softball splits final doubleheader at West Liberty

WEST LIBERTY, W. Va. -- Kylah Swanson homered twice, including a go-ahead blast in the seventh, to defeat West Liberty Sunday in the second game of a doubleheader. The Blue Knights came out on top 6-4 in Game 2 after suffering a 1-0 setback in the opener at WLU Softball Complex.

With the win, UU ends the Kira Zeiter era on a positive note and the squad's five seniors cap their playing careers with a final victory.

//  GAME 1 (WLU 1, UU 0)
UU's Kayleigh Pate (5-11) gave a quality outing in the circle but the freshman righty was saddled with the tough loss. She finished six innings of work with two strikeouts and five hits allowed.

The host Hilltoppers scored the game's only run on a sacrifice fly in the third inning.

WLU's Savanna Sieger (4-4) tossed a one-hit shutout while to silence the Blue Knight bats. Senior center fielder Courtney Kennedy broke up Sieger's no-hitter in the sixth inning with a lead-off single down the left-field line.

//  GAME 2 (UU 6, WLU 4)
The Blue Knights trailed 4-2 entering the final inning of the season and scored four runs to complete the impressive comeback.

UU's Jenna VanHoose and Riley Curtis reached safely to ignite the rally, and then Margo Jackson came through with a clutch RBI hit in her final career at-bat to make the score 4-3 in WLU's favor.

Two batters later, Pate stepped in as a pinch hitter with two outs and kept the momentum going with another incredibly clutch RBI single through the left side to knot the score. Then, Swanson came up next and launched her second home run of the game to left field, putting UU ahead for good. Earlier in the game, the sophomore had recorded a solo home run to get UU on the board in the second frame.

Sophomore hurler Carly Allen earned her third win by shutting down the 'Toppers in the bottom of the seventh. Allen allowed four earned runs on nine hits and did not walk a batter in the complete-game outing.

Jackson, Swanson and Mykee Holtz led UU at the plate with two hits each. Swanson produced a career-high three RBIs.
