Softball's Comeback Bid at WVSU Falls Short

Blue Knights go down 5-0 & 5-4 against the Yellow Jackets

INSTITUTE, W. Va. -- Down to the final out, Britney Bonno's clutch two-run single in the seventh tied the game but Urbana softball came up short in extra innings Friday at West Virginia State, 5-4. The Blue Knights fell in the first game of the league doubleheader, 5-0.

With the pair of setbacks. UU drops to 6-32 overall and 4-16 in league games. The Blue Knights have lost seven consecutive matchups. Meanwhile, the host Yellow Jackets improved to 24-14 (12-8 MEC) while winning their fifth straight game.

//  GAME 1 (WVSU 5, UU 0)
Both teams were limited to only five hits as UU's Kayleigh Pate dueled against WVSU starter Emily Moore.

The Blue Knights were unable to push any runs across after stranding a runner in five of the seven frames. UU's best chance came in the fifth when it got runners on first and second with one out; however, Moore was able to escape the jam.

Sophomore Mykee Holtz roped her first of two doubles on the day to lead five Blue Knights with a base knock in the opening game. Pate's final line included two earned runs on the five hits allowed, while striking out one and walking a batter in six innings of work.

The Jackets scored first with a run in the fourth and then added two in each of the fifth and sixth innings. UU fell victim to four defensive errors.

//  GAME 2 (WVSU 5, UU 4)
WVSU built a 4-0 lead after four, but UU raced back by scoring a run in the fifth and sixth followed by the tying pair of runs in the seventh to force extras. The two teams went scoreless until the Jackets were able to knock in the winning run on a two-out double in the ninth.

Sophomore Carly Allen recorded one of her best outings of the season in the circle for UU. The right-hander threw 8.2 innings with four strikeouts and five earned runs allowed.

At the plate, three players posted multi-hit efforts including Bonno (2 for 4, 2 RBI), Riley Curtis (2 for 4, RBI) and Jenna VanHoose (2 for 5). Holtz and Kylah Swanson each doubled while Courtney Kennedy also joined the hit parade.

UU put two runners on in the eighth and one in the ninth, but had nothing to show for the scoring threat.
