Blue Knights Drop Pair of Games Down South

CLERMONT, Fla. -- Urbana softball suffered a pair of losses Monday morning as the Blue Knights continued their tour at the Spring Games. UU fell 4-2 to Lynn University after leading 2-0, and then fell 7-0 to a tough Grand Valley State squad in the second matchup.

Sophomore shortstop Mykee Holtz led UU by going 3 for 3 in the first game with a run scored. After a double, Holtz scored on Faulkner's two-bagger to give UU a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. However, Lynn responded with a pair of two-run home runs in the bottom half, all unearned runs, to steal the lead as the Fighting Knights held on the rest of the way.

UU totaled seven hits in the opener, including one each from Briana Bamber (RBI), Britney Bonno and Margo Jackson. Lynn produced eight hits with two doubles and two long balls.

Carly Allen was charged with the loss, despite giving up zero earned runs.

In the second game, UU was shut out for only the second time this season as GVSU starter Allie Grys struck out eight batters and surrendered just five hits.

Senior left fielder Riley Curtis led UU with a 2-for-3 effort at the plate and stole a career-high four bases. Bailee Faulkner, Jade Laviolette and Jenna VanHoose each collected a base knock.

The Lakers scored in five of the seven innings, while out-hitting UU 11-5. Laviolette tossed 5.1 innings of relief as Kayleigh Pate (L, 0-1) and Izzy Helm also toed the rubber.

After playing six games in three days, UU will have day off Tuesday before returning to action Wednesday against Barry (2 p.m.) and Winona State (4 p.m.).
