Softball Defeated by Shepherd in Two Road Games

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. -- The Urbana softball team closed the weekend road swing with a pair of losses at Shepherd University, 9-1 and 4-1.

UU drops to 3-21 overall (1-7 MEC) following the defeat, while SU improved to 12-4 (5-1 MEC) overall on the season.

//  GAME 1 (SU 9, UU 1 - six innings)
UU avoided the no-hitter with it's only hit coming in the final inning. Shepherd leaped ahead early with a five-run lead after scoring three in the first and two in the second frame. The Rams added four more runs later on after the Blue Knights pushed their lone run across in the top half of the sixth.

Senior Margo Jackson brought home senior Briana Bamber on a two-out single to left field. Bamber had led off the frame with a walk.

SU out-hit UU 7-1 in the opening contest. The Rams utilized extra opportunities gained from a season-high eight errors by the Blue Knight defense.

//  GAME 2 (SU 4, UU 1)
The Rams scored three unearned runs which proved to be the difference in the second matchup between the two MEC squads. SU scored first with a run in the fourth and then tacked on three more in the next inning to make it 4-0.

UU finally got on the board in the seventh, but it was too little, too late. Sophomore Mykee Holtz ripped a double to lead off the final at-bat and freshman Allison Neeld pushed the run across on a grounder to shortstop. Neeld has now produced five runs in 10 at-bats. For Holtz, it was her team-leading seventh double of the season. The Blue Knights were out-slugged again, 8-3, and committed four errors defensively.

Sophomore Bailee Faulkner doubled and junior Jenna VanHoose singled for the other two UU base knocks.

Freshman starting pitcher Jade Laviolette tossed five innings with two strikeouts, while surrendering four runs (one earned) on seven hits.

//  UP NEXT
UU will stay on the road next week for two conference doubleheaders. The Blue Knights travel to West Virginia Wesleyan on Friday (1 p.m.) and then head over to Glenville State for two more games on Saturday (1 p.m.). The next home games are slated for Wednesday, April 4, when UU hosts Notre Dame (OH).
