Softball Weekend Roundup: Feb. 17-18

WESTFIELD, Ind. -- The Urbana softball team opened the 2018 campaign with four games against Great Lakes Valley Conference schools Rockhurst and UIndy at Westfield, Indiana's Grand Park Sports Campus. The Blue Knights fell 22-16 to Rockhurst in a wild season opener Saturday, then came back for a triple-header on Sunday. UU fell 6-0 and 9-1 to UIndy and 15-7 again to Rockhurst.

// STAT LEADERS
  • UU hit .302 as a team over the weekend, led by senior Margo Jackson and sophomore Bailee Faulkner. Faulkner went 6 for 12 with three RBI and five runs scored, while Jackson went 5 for 10 with a double, three RBI, three runs and four walks.
  • Three others produced four hits including sophomore Kylah Swanson with two doubles and team-high five RBI, along with junior Jenna VanHoose (.400, RBI) and senior Riley Curtis (.333, 3B, 3 RBI).
  • Sophomore Mykee Holtz, freshman Britney Bonno and freshman Kayleigh Pate each registered a double. Bonno and Pate combined for six RBI and six runs scored in their collegiate debuts.
  • Over 22 innings, four UU pitchers saw action in the circle. Sophomore Carly Allen (0-3, 5 K, 7 BB) made two starts and recorded one complete game. Freshmen Izzy Helm, Jade Laviolette and Pate made their pitching debuts.

// KEY MOMENTS
  • UU racked up 16 runs on 16 hits in the opening matchup against Rockhurst. Trailing 6-0, UU came up with four runs in the bottom of the third when Pate cleared the bases on her first career double in her second collegiate at-bat. VanHoose then followed up with a one-out RBI single to make it 6-4.
  • Three innings later, UU was down 17-8 but the Blue Knights kept hitting and pushed six more runs across to make it a three-run contest going to the final inning. Bonno and Swanson each posted RBI doubles, and then Curtis came up big with a two-run triple. Jackson plated Curtis on an RBI groundout to trim the deficit to 17-14.
  • Swanson provided a two-out single to score the final pair of UU runs in the bottom of the seventh in the first game.
  • In the second game of the weekend, the Blue Knights were limited to just two hits in the first matchup with UIndy. Faulkner and VanHoose had the lone base knocks while three others reached base via walk.
  • In the third game and second matchup with Rockhurst, the Blue Knights opened the game with three straight RBI hits from Faulkner, Holtz and Swanson to jump ahead 5-0.
  • The Hawks led 7-5 entering the fourth, but UU again tied the score with a pair of RBI knocks from Faulkner and Pate. Jackson set up the inning with a one-out double to right field. Unfortunately, RU took the lead for good with an eight-spot in the fifth after UU failed to record an out.
  • Playing its third game of the day, UU ran out of gas against UIndy in the second meeting with the Greyhounds. Senior Bri Bamber provided the lone run for the Blue Knights on her RBI single in the second inning. Jackson went 2 for 2 at the plate with a walk.
