Urbana Swept by 13th-Ranked Mercyhurst

Blue Knights fall 13-1 & 5-1

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Urbana University baseball team couldn't get the bats going against 13th-ranked Mercyhurst Sunday afternoon on the campus of Ohio Dominican. The Blue Knights fell 13-1 and 5-1 in the regional twinbill against the Lakers.

RECORDS UPDATE
Urbana moved to 3-6 overall on the season while Mercyhurst improved to 7-1 on the year.

TURNING POINT
Game 1
The Lakers jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two frames and then poured on five runs in the third and four in the fourth to go ahead for good. UU totaled just three hits across the seven-inning contest as MU starter Chris Vallimont struck out 10 of the 19 batters faced. UU second baseman Damario Brown provided a sacrifice fly to plate the only Blue Knight run in the third frame.

Game 2
Mercyhurst produced another early advantage with three runs in the first and limited the Knights to just four hits total. Despite the lack of production, UU had chances to score with nine runners left on base. The best opportunity came in the fifth with the bases loaded and then the sixth following a one-out triple by catcher Zeth Tanner, but UU came up empty on both occasions. The Blue Knights also put two on in their final at-bat, but had nothing to show for it.

Isac Franklin's sac fly in the third trimmed the Blue Knight deficit to 4-1, but the Lakers got the run back in the next half inning.

UU LEADERS
  • Nick Gallagher hit safely in each contest to extend his hitting streak to four
  • Isac Franklin and Brent West reached base in both contests
  • Franklin and Brown produced the only runs on the day with a sac fly
  • Tanner's triple in Game 2 was the only extra-base hit for UU on the day
  • Mickey Barea ran his hit streak to five with a single in Game 1
  • Adam Guay, Colt Woolever and Robbie Guerrero tossed 2.1 shutout relief innings in Game 2
  • Brandon McRae threw his third straight scoreless inning of relief in Game 1

NOTABLES
  • UU tied its season-high strikeouts at the plate in both contests (11)
  • Tanner's triple was the second extra-base hit of his Blue Knight career and the third UU triple of the season
  • The Blue Knights have been outhit in seven of nine games

  • UU Game 1 starter Vitor Takakura (3.0 IP, 7 H, 9 R, 7 ER, 6 BB, 2 K, HBP) and Game 2 starter Will Keller (3.2 IP, 6 H, 5 ER, 3 BB, 2 K, 2 HBP) were tagged with losses
