Blue Knights Split Twinbill at Kentucky State

FRANKFORT, Ky. - The Urbana University baseball team (4-8) split Friday's non-conference doubleheader at Kentucky State (5-17) with a narrow 4-3 loss in Game 1 and 13-5 rout in Game 2 during clear, cold weather conditions.

In the opener, Kentucky State jumped out to a 2-0 lead on UU starter Dalton Greenwalt but the Blue Knights countered with a pair of runs in the top of the second to even the score. Right fielder Nick Gallagher doubled home Brent West and then Mickey Barea pushed Gallagher across on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-2.

The Thorobreds added a sac RBI of their own in the second frame and led UU 3-2 after two complete innings. Then, the two squads traded runs in the sixth, including a solo home run by Gallagher for his second long ball of the year. UU went down in order in the top of the seventh.

Greenwalt pitched into the sixth inning with a season-high 5.1 innings of work, but was saddled with his second loss in three starts. The senior right hander gave up three earned runs on 10 hits (nine singles) with three strikeouts and one walk. Freshman Robbie Guerrero recorded the final two outs on the mound for UU.

Freshman left fielder Daniel Quiroz (2 for 4) moved up to second in the batting order and recorded a pair of hits, including a double. Gallagher also finished 2 for 4 with the double and home run, while West and Zeth Tanner each had a base knock.

The Blue Knights were outhit 10-6 by the Thorobreds in the first game, as KSU's starter Dunn earned the complete-game win.

In Game 2, West produced a career-high four hits (4 for 4) and six RBI to lead the onslaught which tied UU's season high for runs. The senior first baseman posted a two-RBI double in the first to put UU ahead 2-0. However, the hosts put up three runs in the bottom half to claim a 3-2 lead.

West doubled again in his next at-bat to plate two more runs in the third, registered a sac fly in the fourth, and collected an RBI single in the fifth to help put UU ahead for good.

The Thorobreds made it close by trimming the deficit to one, 6-5, in the bottom of the fourth, but the Blue Knights tacked on six runs in the fifth for a comfortable lead. Connor Coy scored on a wild pitch, Quiroz and Gallagher each had RBI doubles, Damario Brown scored on a grounder and West's single accounted for the high production. Gallagher then singled home the final run in the seventh as UU outhit KSU this time, 10-6.

Right-hander Will Keller (3.0 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 6 BB) started on the hill for UU and improved to 2-1 on the year. The Blue Knight relievers were solid as Dylan Sheffer, Patrick Orr and Brandon McRae combined for four shutout innings of work. Orr made his debut on the mound and collected three strikeouts while McRae posted his fourth straight scoreless appearance.
