Urbana Drops Two at Shepherd, Davis Hits First Collegiate Home Run

SHEPHERDSTOWN, W. Va. - Urbana (10-21, 5-11) led twice in the second game of Monday's doubleheader at Shepherd, but the Blue Knights couldn't hang on in a 9-6 setback to the MEC North Division leader. The Rams also won the opening contest by a final score of 11-5.

Damario Brown and Enmanuel Lopez led the way at the plate for Urbana after both registered three hits and two RBI on the day. Lopez extended his active hit streak to a team-high eight games, while also collecting his team-high 13th double.

Brent West had two hits on the day, which both went for two bases, while Tim Feasel also produced a pair of hits. Three others recorded a base knock, including Tanner Davis who launched his first collegiate home run in Game 2.

Urbana trailed 5-1 after two innings in the first game and battled back to get within two in both of the fifth and sixth frames. UU's first run of the day came on a Lopez single up the middle to plate West in the second.

UU scored two in the fifth on a wild pitch and Brown's RBI single to make it 5-3, but the Rams responded with two more of their own against starter Mitchell Lawson. The right hander was roughed up a bit and was charged for 10 earned runs in six innings of work.

The Blue Knights brought it back to a two-run deficit again in the following inning, but missed a big opportunity after loading the bases with no outs.

With UU trailing 7-5 in the sixth, Shepherd put the game out of reach on a two-out grand slam. The Rams loaded the bases on a hit batter and two walks.

The Rams outhit the Blue Knights 8-6 and rode two four-run innings to victory.

In Game 2, Urbana got off to a great start but failed to capitalize throughout the game by leaving the bases loaded three times. UU jumped ahead in the first at-bat after Lopez provided his second RBI single of the day and RBI walk by Davis.

Shepherd eventually tied the game in the second and scored two more in the third for a 4-2 lead.

UU starter Brad Hall completed three innings and was on a short leash after giving up two leadoff singles in the fourth. The southpaw gave up four earned runs and struck out one in the no-decision.

The Blue Knights got two back in the top half of the fourth, tying the game at 4-4, but left the bases juiced for the second time. Davis sent a solo blast over the right field fence with one out and A.J. Finlay recorded an RBI walk with two gone.

After Shepherd took a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the fourth, UU responded with two runs in the fifth to grab the lead at 6-5.

Lopez doubled to right center to lead off and then the Blue Knights loaded the bases again on a walk and hit by pitch. With one down, Mickey Barea and Brown came through with clutch singles like they have all year to put UU ahead.

The momentum had shifted and UU looked to break the game open with DJ Collins at the plate, who is one of the toughest hitters in the league to strike out. However, the senior went down swinging for just the sixth time in 112 at-bats. Finlay, who entered the weekend as the league's leading hitter, came up next and popped up to the right side.

UU entered the eighth inning holding on to the narrow lead behind the brilliant relief work of Bradley Burkholder. The lefty tossed four shutout innings and surrendered just two hits to give UU a chance to close it out.

But the Rams struck with another four-spot late in the game, which included a two-run homer, to edge out the Blue Knights. Fresh off a save in yesterday's matchup, junior Adam Ramirez was tagged with the loss.

The Blue Knights ended up leaving 12 runners on base and were outslugged 12-7. UU committed three errors on defense.
